Hair styles for those with thick hair
I am very new to this board (first post) but am looking for some ideas on hair cuts. I have very thick hair and it seems all the styles I find are for thinner hair (often to make it look fuller) which just don't work for me. I'm very low mantainance and want something that is wash and go. I've short hair and am over due for a touch up but I'd really like a change! I am hoping to get ideas on styles that are flattering from other members who also have thick hair.

Be proud of your thick hair ladies
For gods sake, so many woman would kill for thick hair. type out in google, 'thick hair' and all you get are websites with tips on how to give thin hair 'life and volume"
I have always had particularly thick hair, but I know how to manage it, and I look absolutely fabulous. yea its a pain in my ass sometimes when it grows out, but after all these years, im familiar enough with my hair now to know how to manage all those thick hair problems, (frizz, sweat, poofiness)
a.) make sure your hair is always trim to avoid frizz b.) use certain shampoos that give your hair a SLEEK look c.) when in the shower, flip your hair over and comb your scalp to push out the grease and sweat that thick hair easily accumulates d.) when using the hair dryer, only use your fingers as a comb, never a brush (unless its like 95% dry) e.) if your thick hair is overwhemling your face, straighten the hair that frames your face. f.) usually, if you have bangs, they will get too poofy and overwhelm your face shape, make sure you thin it out regularly (with thinning scissors!)
DO NOT
a.)get hair thinning treatments! b.)cut off all your hair out of frustration c.)cry
believe me, thick hair is beautiful, we're a sexy breed of people, and everyone goes gaga over it. love yourselves ladies! we're very lucky!

Getting easy to manage hair
Hi, my hair was exactly like yours at a stage 2 years ago, and i tryed getting it layered as it was quite long too, but it really made it poof out alot.
So i got my hair chemically straightened, and now i dont even need to blow dry it to get the effect i want, its easy, straight, and now in very fashionable managerable layers, this could be only for you if you were willing to spend the money once a year getting it done

Hair straightening
I have thick wayward hair and can only straighten it and more so since I went to the hairdressers and asked for my hair to be layered towards the ends then to my horror it was cut right up to my neck (my hair was long) and too many layers.
I was considering permanent straightening but where I have bleach in my hair wondered if anyone else had their hair straightened permanently and also had bleach in their hair and happy with the end results???

Thick hair should be long
when you have thick hair, it usually gets big and poofy unless you have some weight to it. My suggestion is to grow it out, then for a wash a go style towel dry it really well comb it out, and spray in some spray-on gel (aussie is a good brand for this). After thouroughly spritzing it with the gel, scrunch it, then bend over and get a dry towel and scrunch and squeeze upside down. finish off with some hairspray and shine spray. this usually takes me 10-15 minutes. and definately get layers once you have it long enough.

Scrunching
will scrunching your hair like this work if your hair is pin straight? I have long thick hair but would like to make it look nice even though I do not have a lot of time to spend on it. I just had twins so I am always wearing a pony tail and I feel so sloppy like that.

Thick hair
Hi - I had exactly the same problem - my hair is really, really thick, and quite long. I went to a new hairdresser who was great and he really thinned it out and gave me a really cool 'shaggy' style. I was really impressed.
I'm not sure where you live, but I would recommend this hairdresser - Ivan at the Drawing Room in Clapham Junction! He is great.
The problem that I am having now though is that my hair is looking really dull and lifeless. This always seems to happen when the season's change....any ideas?

Dull hair
I find that before I get out of the shower a blast of cold water on my hair gets it a little shinier. Also if you blow dry and have a cold blast button on your dryer you can try that too. There are also some products (I get mine from the hairdresser) that add shine and bounce without leaving hair heavy or greasy.

I hate it
I have extra thick hair. I hate it so much.Everytime someone has nice straight hair I get tears in my eyes.I would kill to have thin hair.It is very embarrassing and gets me down.It doesnt go straight or curly , just extra puffy.I had it cut in lots of layers but when I washed it , it went back to normal, the layers caused extra puffness.I wont be trying that again. At the moment , it is long and I am planning on having it cut into a bob but short at the back and long at the front .I prefer having short hair as it is easier to manage and is easier to straighten.

Notes from a cropped blonde
Hello, I'm a female who recently got her hair shorn into a VERY short "mia farrow in rosemary's baby" hairstyle. It was only right before the hairdresser finished that she let me know my hair was so thick that it "probably wouldnt lay flat" and that "you have alot of cowlicks." Oh, just great!
I made it work though, and i 'm growing it longer now with minimal effort, thanks to these tricks:
Even if you're growing out your hair, dont skip out on a professional trim. You might find that they need to layer your hair differently or do something to make it easier for you, or better looking while in "hair limbo" if you mention that you're growing it out.
Hair products: I hate that "crunchy wet" look that gel gives hair, so to weigh mine down, I use a smoothing creme to fight frizz (not greasy at all) and then I apply a spray wax or regular wax to texturize hair and make strays lay the way I want. You can also use 'hair glue' in place of wax i guess, but I prefer the former.
Any cowlicks can be controlled with a dab of hairspray to that section of your roots- and while hair is still wet, blow dry any cowlicks into place using a brush to comb roots in the direction that you want. It doesnt take much but makes a huge difference. You'll soon find it really easy to manipulate problem areas, especially around your face.
Maybe you didnt like the way your hairdresser styled it, but that doesnt mean its not a good cut for you- take some down time to fool around with different styles. Sometimes all you need to do is change your fringe to be happy. (we should all be so lucky, right?)
(Warning- Cliche saying up ahead
Just my 2 cents.

to kar121191, Naturally I have thick, poofy, wavy brown hair. After I style my hair I get it to be smooth and straight hair. But It takes me 2 hours to straighten, smooth out and make it look like I had always wanted when I was younger. So if your willing to spend the time on your hair you can make it look just how you want it to!

Dont beat around the bush!
i have naturally thick hair and i love it! people go to great lengths to get hair like us!yeah it can b annoyin at times like when u want to straighten it...but myn has a natural curl in it....and i wanna keepit that way..so i wash and condition it well, towel dry it,then spray john frieda dream curls into it and let nature dry it.so not onli it save ure electricity (as it now costs £4:00 to dry your hair with a hairdryer for 5 mins ) so just be proud of what nature gave you and treat it well!thats the best advice i vcan give!because,u have thick hair, that u can style in manyways, and those gals with poker straight hair can never get what u have,bt u can get what they want
