| Thread started by: | "My life-changing rhinoplasty experience, please read if you considering rhinoplasty" Posted by popsy26 13 May at 12:00
Hey girls
I have been reading your posts and I thought I would share my experience as i have been through it.
I had a rhinoplasty last year with DR NATHAN of TRANSFORM. I had a huge hump and I told him specifically to only remove the hump and thats it, don't lift the tip, don't turn it into a pigs nose and don't make me look different. He was confident, actually, cocky, that he could achieve this and stupidly I trusted him
When the cast came off, I was distraught. He had removed the hump TOO much and left me with an open roof deformity - this is when the bones of the bridge haven't been pushed back together therefore leaving a gap in the roof. He had taken too much cartilige out of my tip so that it contracted upwards like a pig giving me loads of assymetric nostril show from the front when I only had minimal nostril show before. I was so upset, I had done a lot of research on rhinoplasty and I knew that if the basic shape after cast removal was horrible, chances are that you won't like it. 4 days after cast removal, i was so worried that I asked to see him. He asked me to drive to London all the way from the Midlands at 5am to meet him at 7.30 am, and then he saw me for 15 minutes and basically told me its all in my head. Then I saw him in august, and he denied there was a problem and actually made me cry. All he cared about was that his patients waiting to see him in the waiting room didn't see me cry, he literally forced me out of the door.
It turned me into a recluse, I didn;t go out with my friends for a whole year, I didn't see other family unless i HAD to, I didn;t shop or treat myself, I can honestly say that I was depressed. My family used to look at me with concern wondering why my face had changed. My doctor prescribed me diazepam to sleep and anti-depressants, but I stopped taking them because they made me more anxious. I lost weight, I dveloped bad skin from stress, basically, my life went upside down. As the months went by, the shape didn;'t change, the tip still remained high, the bridge still had an open roof and was still wide, basically, it didn't change apart from swelling decreasing. Also, I started to develop breathing problems, my nose would become 100% blocked and i couldnt breathe unless i used a decongestant spray 3 times a day. I did this for 6 months.
A few months post op, as I started researching revisions, I came across lookyourbestuk.com/forum, which has a lot of info on rhinoplasty. On there, it recommends a couple of surgeons who are the only rhinoplasty specialists in the UK. I wish I'd found that site before, as all this time, I hadn't realised how complex it is, how easy it is to get wrong and how hard it is to get right. Immediately,I felt upset that I had consulted a company like Transform. THEIR SURGEONS ARE NOT SPECIALISTS. THEY ARE A JACK OF ALL TRADES AND A MASTER OF NONE.
I came across Basim Matti of Harley Street who has done thousands of noses and is a well respected revision specialist. He did my revision, it cost £6500 (Therefore I spent £10.5k on my nose in a year as Transform wouldn;t reimburse me). He had to take cartilige from my ear to build up my tip. He was going to use rib cartilige on my bridge to close the open roof but decided against it and used my septal cartilige instead. It was a 5 hour operation. He also discovered that Dr Nathan had removed too much support from one side, making my septum deviated when it was straight before. There was also a massive blockage at the top of my nasal passage that MR Matti removed.
When the cast came off, I so was happy that he corrected all of my problems. I now have a normal nose that looks natural and not like a pigs nose. A whole year I had no confidence, and even now because of habit, I am still recovering from the past year, but i can see the old me coming back. This is something that I don;'t think I;ll ever recover from fully FOr the rest of my life, I'll be critically analysing the grafts in my nose watching that they don;t shift or absorb. My new surgeon has already warned that due to the catalogue of errors, I may need another revision in 6 months to further correct MR Nathan's work.
I just wanted to warn anyone who is considering rhinoplasty with these clinics, don;t rush into and don;t be lured by the offers and bulls*** they tell you. Rhinoplasty is so difficult, this is your face at risk and it can change you forever (like it did me). Don;t take risks and only go with the best. Look at the surgeon, research the surgeon, ask him these questions (Don;t ask the care cordinator): 1) How many ops have you performed in your lifetime 2) How many do you do a week/year? 3) Do you do both open and closed? 4) What are your qualifications? Eg are you BAAPS registered 5) WHere and who did you do your training with? 6) Do you use grafts? (If he doesn't - walk away) 7)Do you charge for revisions? 8)Do you do computer imaging? (Don't accept drawings or scribblings) 9) Do you go on courses/seminars to stay uptodate with new techniques?
These are the main questions you need to ask if you insists on sticking with a surgeon at these high street clinics. If you are researching rhinoplasty, please look at www.lookyourbestuk.com/forum. You will find a lot of people there who you can learn from and share information with
Good luck
xx

Atlast sum1 hu has a similar experience to mine but with a better ending.
Hi I have had rhinoplasty 6mnths ago. Stupidiest mistake of my lyf. my nose had a hump.but it was very attractive. i went thru Hospital group.biggest f##king Cons!with a dodgy guy(mr Senno) hu called himslf a surgeon?i did nt rsearch then to realse that UK doctors require atleast a BAAP,FRSC to be specialized. This guy had a brazilian qualification!?WTF is he doin operating a big task on a very important operation?peoples life can be ruined!Anyway i went along stupidily.
During my consultation i told the guy to remove my hump and just staightn my nose. However i STRESSED so many TIMES not to reduce the lengt of my nose or 2much bridge. And he seemed ignorant and cocky too. But like an idiot i went along with it. My operation was in Birmingham opened the splint after 7days and to my suprise i saw the most horrific nose on my face!!No bridge, circle fat nostrils.round tip?Where had the long, sharper tip gone?he had removed so much cartillage i luk unrecognisable.
This had changed my life so much. I used to contimplate suicide.(still do sometimes)Have not seen any friends for 6months,not bin at work. Only started(far away from home) to collect for a revision. I was put on Anti-depression. I cnt face any1.And i am really really desperate for an augmentation rhinoplasty to get more length. But i dont know who to trust?and price?

For the rhinoplasty questions...someone elses sad experience and how important it is to go in knowing exactly what you want and making sure they are experienced in rhinoplasty....again sorry to scare you...at least you read this before you go not after something bad has happened xxx

I had a similar experience - i have been told to go onto lookyourbest forum and it is really good as it has a seperate rhinoplasty forum.
I really do understand what you are going through - rhinoplasty is a very different procedure and if only i knew then what i know now - i too think about suicide. Keep going on the patient forum as you will find some comfort from speaking to different people with similar situations.
I have been for a consultation with Mrs KAt (she was brilliant) and reasonably priced (consultation £120 and around £4000 for the op-check her web site). I have heard that she is a general plastic surgeon. I am also going to see Mr Rowe-Jones (consultation is £200 not sure about the surgery and there is a ten week wait to see him so if he is someone you want to see book now so you get the operation as soon as you hit the 12month wait!)
Good Luck x

I really think you should get a consult with Matti, he has done loads of revisions and has sorted out loads of ppl like you, he is pricey but you're health and happiness is worth it. JRJ is good but he doesnt do as many revisions especially complicated ones x

Can I ask you for the web address for Mr Matti, I too am needing a nose job corrected, I got mine done in prague and now have a squint nose and it seems to of started concaving. It would be brilliant to have computer imagery done as I don't know how they can guess from a description of what we feel we need as it seems there is quite a difference between their idea and their on what should be the end result. I am glad you are happy now. wow a 5 hour op!!!! but def worth it!!!
Thanks Lind's

hi there, really sorry to hear your story. I just wish i had read this before i had i mine cos i'm also not happy with the tip / nostril piggy look, plus my nostrils aren't level. B4 you couldnt really see but cos the tip has been lifted its ver visible. Feel that i look like samantha janus and rather than being paranoid about having photos done side on i hate my facce front on, espec on photos cos one side has a slight bump whcih i dont notice in the mirror but when the flash is on the camera, it looks bad. But thenagain, even if i had read this before i would probably have told myself that it will be ok for me. But it seems that very few people are happy with their new noses and lots of people have more than one op, which is just too much money for me! I would def agree that unless u are serioulsy unhappy, dont have rhino. I had it cos i had recieved comments off shitty little teenagers. my family said it wasnt that bad and to be honest i didnt think it was. so i let these comments effect me so much adn now i;m just as paranoid and £4k worse off! But in a way its worse cos its front on that i dont like now!

MiniFairyGirl,
Please remember, everyone has a gift that god has given to them. I'm sure your nose is not that bad. Please take this advice, unless you are suicidal because of your current appearance, don't risk it otherwise you are likely to get a nose you never wanted and will have to live with it for the rest of your life, or consider revision rhino (2nd op) which will be more difficult and could cause more complications.
It's not about beauty. Rhino should be reserved for those with serious medical conditions or seriously disfiguigured people, not for tweeks! Please save your money. Don't worry if you have already paid a deposit. Your natural nose cannot be bought. I had rhino recently, I didn't ask for this nose, but now I have to live with it. It looks like they just stuck a nose on me. Think about your family and friends. How would you feel if your mother/father/sister got different nose and looked different. I know I would be devastated if my mother walked in looking different. It is a big change since the nose is a prominent feauture of the face. Its your choice, but I would ask you to search on www.google.com

my rhino was a BIG mistake. He took away one problem and gave me another one. Its straighter than it was before, but its a lot more bulbous (sp?) because of the scar tissue which formed. Now its near on impossible to fix.
Noses dont need to be as perfect as we think they do. There are plenty of gorgeous women out there with less than gorgeous noses. Cheryl Cole and Jessica Simpson for example. I honestly think if either of them had their bumps removed it would make them sooo much less attractive.
Most people hate their noses after rhinoplasty's. Its probably the most difficult procedure to do and even the worlds greatest (Raj Kanodia, the guy who did Ashlee Simpson / Jennifer Aniston / Cameron Diaz's noses) said it is an unbelievably difficult operation to do, its no quick fix because it takes up to 2 years to see the final results and there is a list as long as your arm of things that could, and often do, go wrong.
I seriously wish i'd left mine alone. I look back at old pictures now and want to cry. There was nothing wrong with it! I'd LOVE to have it look as "disgusting" as i thought it was back then.
Just think about it carefully girls and be prepared for the things that can go wrong and know that you are probably going to hate it for at least a year.

| | "Omg i totally agree with you...." Posted by pinkchick25 5 January at 23:54
....I had a rhino 5 weeks ago and been crying everyday ever since, its only really today I've felt like I can get through this and work out a plan for a re-op (although I don't know who will do it or what I will have to pay as I don't see my surgeon til 3 months post-op) but I can't bear looking at photos of me before as its so upsetting as my nose wasn't bad or ugly, I just felt like it was at the time. I only wanted my bump filed down and narrowed at the top and specifically said don't lift it/ touch the tip/expose my nostrils......as it turns out he has done all three and managed to distort my left nostril by removing too much cartilage Now I realise how lovely I looked before.......please don't consider a nose job unless its so bad that you cry about it everyday because you may end up like me. I had a good surgeon too so god knows what happened on the day, I was so scared that day that I nearly backed out (I was kept waiting for 5 hours) now I wish I had. If you do go for it make sure you have enough money put aside for a revision just in case xx

Try not to look at your nose - remember people look at your face not your nose...if you are upset it is a long road you have to travel before any chance of any sort of revision surgery.
Im six months post op and feel like i look deformed...dont worry, there is loads of support on here. Also make sure you try lookyourbest forum in the rhinoplasty section xxx Thinking of you xxx

Thanks for your comments
Its really difficult to sue these people. Transform is apparently owned by a guy who used to be a solicitor. There's just no point. First you have to spend big bucks on getting a lawyer that specialises in medical malpractice, and then you have to prove malpractice/negligence. I could say that ruined my septum, but then Transform can easily say that there is no evidence to suggest that this wasn;'t deviated to begin with even before my op with Dr Nathan. its very hard, time consuming and expensive, and to be honest, I want to put it all behind me. I can't go through any more stress, and to be honest, if just by getting my story out on forums to your girlie helps to prevent one person making the same mistake, then thats satisfying enough for me.

| | "How can suergeons get away with things like this?" Posted by tashbox87 13 May at 13:17
I am glad you are on the road to recovery, but its still shocking that surgeons can and do things like this and seem to think they can get away with it. Go and see a solicitor and get some legal advice, I would say you will be entitled to compensation. Log a formal complaint, and try and find a governing body or a company that regulates standards and log a formal complaint with them. These so called surgeons shouldn't be able to get away with treating patients like rubbish and leaving them with no aftercare after doing such a poor job!!
I hope you start feeling better soon

hi popsy, sorry to hear about your bad experience, i cant believe surgeons like that can get away with work like that, and carry on working on other patients! he should be banned from rhino.
im glad to hear you're on the road to recovery, you should file a complaint to transform and sue for compensation! You lost a whole year of your life because of him, it makes me so angry just thinking about it!!!
