"Did the nhs get it wrong?"

Hi,

Not sure why I am on here really - I guess I need to understand what has happened to me? I am 28 years old and healthy and we already have a 10 year old girl. We decided we would try for another baby.

At 13 weeks I went for my dating scan and to my horror and heartbreak was told there was no sign of a baby and I was going to have a miscarriage. I had all the signs of being pregnant and my midwife had said all was well and no sign of bleeding.

Short story was we were told we could go home and wait or have the operation to remove the "waste product" (that is what the hospital named our baby!) We decided we would go home and wait.

2 days later, the cramping started and when I stood up the blood poured from me. I was taken to A&E and lost 4 pints of blood, had various blood transfussions and an operation to remove the waste product. After 1 day in intensive care and 4 days on the ward I was going home, really confussed as the doctor who carried out the operation said I had delivered a full placenta and parts of a baby and was lucky to be alive due to the amount of blood I had lost in only 2 hours. End result is I am now on iron tablets for the next 6 months and so confussed about what happened.

Did the doctor at our scan get it wrong and should they have noticed there was a full placenta and not "waste product"? Or do I need to accept this is one of the complications of a miscarriage? We were not advised that this could happen?

Thanks for reading.
Michelle. x

it was my sixth pregnancy (long story) and i went to a sccan at five+3 weeks and they said it looked fine and booked me for my 12 week scan, after weeks of throwing my guts up it finally arrived and in the room the woman did the scan and after a few seconds said theres nothing there and started to wipe the gel off, im like what? she just said sit in the waiting room the doctor will see you shortly so me feeling like a total nut as if id dreamt the whole thing sat there waiting went see the doctor he said it was prob a molar preg (cancer) and that i had 2 choices go home and wait collect a sample and bring it in when nature had taken is course or book in for a d&c. Thats all i was told ... nothing else so i had the d&c and was discharged the same day. no explanation nothing. but the results were clear. and i have 2 great kids and another on the way fingers crossed

just wanted to say how sorry I am. Haven't been thru anything like you describe but have had 3 miscarriages so got some idea how devastating it is. Unfortunately your experience at the hospital seems to be fairly common, there are several threads on here with absolute horror stories of how some women are treated and lots of us seem to get sent home not really knowing what has happened or why. The worst of it is we're in no fit state to hassle anyone for answers. Hope some of the other girls on here can be more helpful but just wanted to let you know someone was thinking of you.

Lotsa love, Clare xxx
"Not again..."

It's such a shame that so many of us come on here having horrific experiences to do with the NHS! Yet we can't all be wrong. Personally I thought they only mistreated me coz I'm still young (nearly 24) and me and my partner aren't married. But it seems it's not just me they've mistreated! When I had my first m/c and they told me that I was no longer pregnant the doc almost announced the news like "congratulations, you're not pregnant!" It was as if he thought the baby was a mistake anyway. Not fair at all! And as for everything else I've been through, well the hosp in question are getting a stern letter from me soon!!!

Michelle - My experience is different from yours but equally as awful (I started a thread about it on here so won't go into it again). It's just gone on and on though. In fact I was rushed back into hosp on Saturday night again. As Clare says, at the time we're not in the state of mind to question professionals over what's gone wrong so it's entirely up to you what you do now. I've chosen to question the hosp over their actions but I don't think whatever kind of response I get I will pursue it after that. It's too painful and I just want them to know how much they've upset me.

To make matters worse my nhs gp has told me that it's not normal procedure to give me an early scan next time I get pregnant and that I'll have to wait til 12 weeks (despite everything I've been through and despite the fact that I cried when she told me that)! So I'm saving all my pennies at the moment and I'm gonna go private for as long as I can afford to during my next pregnancy. I'm going to be avoiding the nhs at all costs for as long as I can!!!

Let us know what you decide to do (if anything). And I'm always here to help out. (And express my very angry opinions about the nhs!!!)

"Scan"

Claire,

I would ask GP again about an early scan. They scanned me last time at 5 weeks and again at 9 weeks because of my history of miscarriages. 9 week scan identified a missed miscarriage but I would rather have done it that way that waited til 12 weeks thinking everything was honky-dorey.

If GP still says no, I would just contact the hospital and say you're concerned and ask for a scan appt.

Good luck for the future anyway,

"Scans"

unfortunately I think it is a bit of a post code lottery whether you get additional scans or not. My GP is fantastic and, as I have had 2 miscarriages this year, he has referred me for an early scan. Unfortunately, the hospital have sent the referral back refusing to do it for "reassurance" purposes.
I have found a clinic where I can have an early dating scan for £85 so I have made an appointment for next week. It is wrong that the NHS won't support me, goodness knows I pay a fortune in taxes, but at the end of the day I am willing to pay £85 for (hopefully!) the peace of mind it will give me.

Good luck and hoping everything turns out well for you

"Foetal medicine?"
Posted by n17claire 13 September  at  13:41

I've spoken to a midwife this week who has told me to go back to the gp before we start trying again. As I've had 3 consecutive m/c's now (apparently losing twins separately counts as 2 m/c's and not just one) it is supposed to be procedure to be referred to the "Foetal Medicine"(???) department at my hospital. (anyone heard this before???)
She reckons that once I've been checked over and they look at my history they'll refer me to a clinic in London. (My brother was born at full term with severe chromosonal abnormalities which weren't picked up during pregnancy, and died at 2 days old.)
Does anyone know anything about this??

"Hey claire,"

my doctor referred me to gynaecology dept at my local hospital after my 3rd m/c on the run. My experiences have been nothing like yours as you know but know it's standard practise for them to refer you after 3 for investigations as to why it keeps happening. They took blood from me and my husband to check our gene compatibility and tested me for stuff like anaemia and sticky blood and my progesterone level. Can't help with what happens if you get referred on from there but thought it might help to know what to expect from the first bit. Hope you're doing ok,

love, Clare xxx
