Hi. I have been called to hospital for antibody blood tests (m/c was 25th October 2007)
Any idea what this is all about?

Hi,
After I miscarried on the 10th of January the gynae sent me for Antiphospholipid antibody blood tests. These atnibodies cause blood clots in the blood vessels of the placenta, which decrease the blood flow to the baby. You can read more about it on http://www.womens-health.co.uk/antiphos.asp or google the words

You can google the words "Antiphospholipid antibodies and miscarriage"
Hope I could be of some help. Kay

that when they examined the baby and placenta after the D & C, they discovered massive amounts of blood clots in the placenta - these had prevented nutrients getting to baby which is why he didn't make it.
Apparently, it is very unusual to find this level of clotting, so much so that they thought it necessary to call me in after only the one m/c (usually 3)
The clotting is thought to be caused by antiphospholipid antibodies (awaiting more blood test results re this)
they have said there is every chance, if left untreated, that the same thing will happen in any future pregnancy
I am therefore on a strict regime of aspirin to thin my blood and may be placed on daily heparin injections.
Anyway, just thought you may like to know the outcome. It is noce in a way to have a reason why our baby died, even though it may well be a long term problem.

I also had to be tested for this but all came back clear after blood tests. The doctor suggested going on asprin but I wasn't quite sure why as all tests were fine. I have had 2 m/c and asked for these tests as wanted to try and obviously prevent another one. But as it was not that and just put down to bad luck. Like you say that in a way you have some answers and next time round they can help you. Hope you are ok. Take care and good luck Vic xx
