"Weak cervix?"

i am not sure if this is the right forum to ask this, i just lost my 2nd baby due to my waters breaking prematurely. both losses were in my 2nd trimester one at 14 weeks and at 19 weeks and i had no other symptoms or pain.

well the doctors have said it probably cervical incompetance and have advised putting a stitch in for the next pregnancy. i do not know of anyone having this done before even though i have read lots of articles on it. it seems to have a high success rate but then again in pregnancy anything can happen.

could anyone whos has had the procedure done before let me know what their experience has been like, please? i really need information as i am so scared and worried. i am trying to cope with the fact that i am not pregnant anymore and its just so hard to find the strength to get through each day.

i just need hope that it will alright the next time, i do so want to hold my baby soon

thank you

Milly

Hi

I lost my first baby nearly 2 weeks ago on 10/08 at 19 weeks due to my waters breaking whilst I was sleeping. I went straight to the hospital as soon as I woke which was heartbreaking as the heart beat was still strong, but when the registrar scanned me they said, as suspected that there was no water/fluid around the baby. The next day I was induced which again was another heartbreaking stage as it seems that you go through so much stress and trauma for nothing at the end of it. Leaving a maternity hospital without a baby is just .... well ..... words cannot describe the pain. You too know how it feels.

Before I left the hospital the specialist consultant came to speak to me to say that it could be a number of things, ie, weak cervix, infection or just unlucky. He mentioned there is a drug that can also be taken which strengthens everything down below. He didn't mention a stitch to me but I have heard that a lot from other people since my loss. A girl I work with also mentioned that she has heard of people having botox injected into their cervix to plump it up??

I am meeting with my consultant again in about 6 weeks and I am going to ask him lots of questions about the things I've been reading and hearing about lately and hopefully things may work out better next time, if there is a next time - which I'm really hoping there is.

I am sorry to hear about your loss too - isn ... just the worst feeling ever? I cannot get my head round it at all.

My consultant has told me that if or when I get pregnant again, I am to tell my midwife immediately to arrange an appointment to see him so that he can monitor me from 12 to 28 weeks. He said that I will be fed up with seeing him but it will stop me from going grey!!

Please stay in touch with me so that we can let eachother know how we are getting on as it seems that we may have a lot in common and know how eachother is feeling.

I've just read yours and honeybee's posts and my heart totally goes out to you both. I've miscarried in the past (not cervix related as far as I know) and that was hard enough, but hearing about how far along you both got is so heartbreaking.

I'm 25weeks pregnant again and have worried almost daily about this since 12 weeks, after a miscarriage it seems like you get over one hurdle and there's another to overcome. I worry about it so much I've been to see my GP about it and also talked to my midwife too, they both seemed to be saying that although there's not really any way of telling if it's going to happen, once you've been diagnosed and once the stitch is in place then it's much more positive. I'm sorry I don't have any better advice for you about the procedure etc, but they really reassured me that the outcomes are usually succesful afterwards. I still worry about it happening now, but if I was in the position where I'd had the stich done I'd be feeling more reassured I think.

I really hope everything turns out well for you both, take care xxx
"Incompetent cervix"

hello there,
i have been diagnosed with an incompetent cervix (IC) back in 2004 i have had three mid-trimester miscarriages at 21, 19, 17 weeks gestation (1 girl and two boys)my first pregnancy(2003) went well until 18weeks then my waters broke and was laid up in hospital until 21weeks when i went into labour, the second preganancy (2004) the doctors monitored me and couldnt explain what was wrong with me i felt a heavy feeling and went to the hosptal at 17weeks and again laid up for two weeks but later miscarried spontaniously. i was then diagnosed with IC & blood diorder (hetrozygos) and agreed with the doctor that i would be monitored from day one of the pregnancy. I fell pregnant third time and was scanned weekly, however at 16weeks my cervix had dialated to 3cm and a suture was to put in place. I went to theatreand was still 3cm the surgeon tried to put the suture in but my waters went and i had the baby that day. Now im pregnant again with my fourth pregnancy and was scanne from 5weeks and had regular swabs done to monitor infection. I was then took to theatre at 11:20 4th July 2008 and put to sleep to have the suture put in place. the procedure took 25mins with little blood loss and at that point i was 13weeks. today i am 15weeks and dont feel any different physically which is good! but i feel at ease that i have "my magic stitch" in place. I am getting swabs done fortnightly and scans 4weekly intervals. fingers crossed for me any questions email me at honeybee007@hotmail.co.uk i will be happy to help or be there for a chat as im currently on bedrest until im 20weeks and it would be nice to hear from ladies in the same situation as me x x x
