Hi I prob went to same clinic as you - so did my friend. i had conscious sedation, friend had nothing. She said pain was horrendous. I found it painful with sedation. if i ever had to do again would have it done while asleep.
Just my advice.. some girls in there had nothing and were fine.
Hope it goes ok - they are lovely to you in there. they will look after you.
Take care

"Should i have a surgical abortion without anaesthetic"
Posted by gloucestergirl 21 June  at  17:11

Hi All
I'm booked to have a surgical abortion with marie stopes next week. I'm currently 8 weeks pregnant.
The clinic has told me that 'a lot' of women opt for the procedure without anaesthetic. Has anyone had a surgical abortion without anaesthetic? They tell me the pain will be 'bearable' but I don't really know what that means.
Any experiences you can share of abortion without anaesthetic would be great. The other option is sedation - what is that like?
Thanks ever so much. I really need some help in making up my mind on what to do.

I had one with sedation and I was in pain, I did feel out of it but I was still in a bit of pain and quite a lot afterwardss. If I had to do it again I would be put to sleep I think

For the clinic there is less risk for THEM to give you no anasthetic, ideally they would prefer to just dish out the tablets and let you deal with the abortion at home, but I guess you did not want that.

Any chance you could just forget about the whole thing and have your baby? I know you did not ask for this advice, but it is worth saying that you can back out of this right up to the last second, even if you are all prepped and gowned and on the table. You would not be the first and you wont be the last.

Although you might feel a huge sense of relief as soon as the abortion is over, you dont know how you will feel 5 weeks, 5 months, 5 years or 50 years after you do this. Abortion generally does not solve your problems, it just creates new ones.

You are stronger than what you think, and there is always a way to chose life for your child, sometimes you just have to be braver and more creative to find the solution.

Take care

"What??"

I'm sorry gaelfish but this is the 2nd or 3rd post of yours that Ive seen trying to encourage someone to keep it. You are obviously anti-abortion which is fine, its your choice but the girl is obviously not wanting to go through with the pregnancy and I think its unfair of you to say things like this. Someone said that to me and I had an abortion which was completely the right thing for me to do but I felt awful for about a year after because of what other people thought I should and should not do. Sorry but I just don't think its right to do that to someone who is in a difficult enough position as it is...

hey huni

i had a surigcal abortion without anaesthetic in january. during my procedure there were complications (not due to there being no anaesthetic and i could practically guarantee these complications wouldnt happen to you - it was just misfortunate for me that they happened) but i would say that the pain was bearable it just depends on your pain threshold and what you are expecting.
Although i would suggest that you think about whether you can take the emotional/psycological pain that you experience through being awake - you ARE aware of what is happening and that CAN be difficult to deal with even if you are COMPLETELY sure of your decision, nothing can really prepare you for it.
ALWAYS here if u need me huni, good luck whatever you do and just make sure you are happy with your decisions (i know you're probably sick of hearing it but it really is the best advice anyone can give u)

Do you have the option of having aneasthetic?

Sorry I can't really tell you whats it like without it as I had it with it, I prefereed it like that as I had no pain at all during and barely any afterwards.

With sedation, I've read that you can feel it but you're pretty out of it so not as aware of the pain.. but thats only what ive read.

Sorry I can't be much help. xx

"Dont do it awake!"

Hi, i had an abortion last august, i was going to have it whilst been awake, but just before i was taken down the nurse said to me " you do know you are going to be able to see what they will do to you",
so i couldnt do it, i got put to sleep instead which was the best thing to do as it seemed over in seconds,
you really dont need to know exactly what they are doing so get put to sleep, or you might regret it
