"Support questions"

Hi,
I am currently taking a Masters in Health Psychology and as part of my project I would like to look into psychological support for individuals considering and having an abortion. I know that when I myself had an abortion, I wished there had been more support before I made my descision. I feel now that this would have helped me with my feelings afterwards. I'm not asking people to take part in my research, as I'm still only deciding what to look into. But I was just wandering if other people felt the same? Is there a distinct lack of support before and after? Is this something that needs to be changed? I myself felt that the session I had prior to the procedure, I was sat down and asked how I was feeling. I poured out my emotions but felt that the "councellor" provided me with no help.....I guess I was looking for further answers....anyone can just sit and listen!!

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks
Sara
xx

"Am feelin exactly the same as you"

yes sara i feel exactly the same. I went private for my abortion in september this year. not one person asked me why i was doing this or how i was feeling and was practically shoved out of the clinic when it was over. I was expecting alot more warmth and support in a place dealing with such sensitive issues.
Afterwards i became extremely depressed and went and saw my student counsellor who, like you said yours did, just sat and listened. They offered no advice or support but just nodded their heads and expected me to speak for a full hour which is not what i needed. I wanted to hear that what i was feeling was normal, that it would get better and I had made the right decision but I heard nothing like that. I was in university in england and returned home to ireland last week as I'd becum so depressed. I really think before and aftercare are needed as soon as possible within the abortion procedure.
Hope this helps xx
