I have never been to the GUM clinic, but I have decided to go I have booked my appointment I know where I'm going but I have no idea what they will do...can anyone tell me what they do there as in like blood tests ect

Im not sure about the different GUM clinics round the country but i'll give you a quick run through of the one i visit:
Basically you'll go into the waiting area and fill out some forms, just with your details and who your doctor is etc.
Then you go through into a side room and talk to a doctor about things like what method of contraception you use, when your last period was, and whether your in a relationship. That kind of thing. And also what your at the clinic for, the doctor then asks if you want to be tested for HIV and syphilis, which they need to take blood samples for.
Then your led into a room with a big chair with stirrups on... Like in the episode of friends when Rachel has her baby and Ross gets his legs in them (if you've seen it). Theres also various bits of equipment on shelves and a little metal table.
An assistant then comes in and takes your blood providing you've asked for that test. But my thoughts are, whilst your there, you might aswell have all the tests! The assistant then tells you to strip your bottom half and sit underneath a big paper towel on the chair. So once shes out the room you get undressed and sit on the chair.
When the door opens again it will be the doctor and the assistant. The doctor tells you how to sit and to put your legs on the stirrups so she can get a good view of you! She then gets out the instrument known as a speculum (look it up on google images if your unsure what i mean) and puts some lubrication on the end and slips it into your vagina. Then she gets various swabs (abit like a cotton bud) and takes skin samples from your cervix.
And thats pretty much it!!
Results come back normally between 7 and 14days.
