In this time of recession, most people are tightening their pockets and would set aside plastic surgery in their priorities. Thought some patients found a practical way to have an affordable plastic surgery through medical tourism. Some may have doubts on the quality of this low cost plastic surgery abroad. But popular medical tourism countries like Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, India and others have been proven to provide high quality medical and health care.
Choosing for the right surgeon is one of the most important thing to do to ensure quality whether you will have a plastic surgery in the US or abroad. Here are some factors that I have gathered to help you choose your plastic surgeon:
- The Doctor must hold a Degree in Medicine and Surgery and must have at least six years of surgical training and experience, with at least three years in plastic surgery.
- The Doctor should be a qualified Specialist in Plastic, Cosmetic or Reparative Surgery. Take note that the only Speciality legally recognised to practise Cosmetic Surgery is that of Plastic, Cosmetic and Reparative Surgery.
- The Doctor must be a member of The American Board of Plastic Surgery, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or similar organisations in other countries.
- He/She must only operate in accredited medical facilities and adhere to a strict code of ethics. The Doctor's title as a Specialist in Plastic, Cosmetic and Reparative Surgery must be registered in their Medical Association. A patient can ask his/her surgeon for this.
- The Doctor's reputation, reliability and medical management are some things you should look into to assess the quality of his performance in plastic surgery. Check his records if there is low level of repeat operations, professional and good relationship with his/her patients.
- It is also important for a Doctor to continue medical education requirements such as standards and innovations in patient safety, necessary trainings and updates.
- It will also be helpful to find a doctor abroad through a referral.
