"Self tan - what's the best product to use?"
Posted by scrapsnscoobs 19 February  at  19:11

Hi Girls

I am just wondering what is the best product to use.

I have used st tropez and also Claris but I see fake bake seems to be quite popular has anyone used it before.

I been using self tan for a few months now and have given up sunbeds since my friend got cancer.
I know it is the sensible option, do you find that it wears of quicker in certain places?

I bought a Dreamtan to go with my selftan and use it in my bed, it's made a real difference and I can top up my tan when ever I want but I'm not sure if st tropez suits me.

I'm quite willing to try a few different types but not sure what I should go for, does anyone ever have a spray tan in a salon and does it last longer?

"False tan"
Posted by jeraldine3 2 January  at  12:56

hi ladies

i have lots of sisters and we have tried and tried every false tan on the market.

the Body Shop Cocoa Moisturising tan is the one !!!! Does not go patchy, goes on lightly so ya don't look orange and false. Does not make you look as if ya have false tan on it makes ya colour slightly over the 2 days. The medium to dark one i use and i am red haired. Does not show patchy when wearing off - But make sure you wash your HANDS!!!!!!!

I always use fake tan, I myself used to go on the sunbed but stopped that after reading so much I decided to stop. The fake tan that I use is Pizbuin i think is fab... lovely smell to. Fake tan does seem to rub off some places quicker especially in the crease of my arm where i bend my arm when im sleeping (this is where i miss the sunbed) Exfoliating is important to do before putting fake tan on. I dont feel that getting a spray tan in a beauty shop lasts any longer than doing it your self at home... Ive been for loades at different prices and I found the St Tropez was most expensive and didnt last as long as the others!!!!!

If you dont mind me asking but whtat is a dreamtan?

"Couture tan"

I have used lots of fake tans, the best one I've found is the Couture Tan. It comes in two different strengths Romantic Glow and Romantc Bronze, and it is available from salons.

Salon or home tans will last the same amount of time, what will make your tan last longer is the prep you do before your tan and how you look after it afterward.

You should exfoliate and moisturise as part of your skin care regime anyway. The day before your tan exfoliate (as normal) and shave. (If you shave the same day the tan will irritate your skin). If you use a body wash that contains oil, or highly moisturising properties it will form some form some degree of barrier to the absorbtion of the tan, and will effect the final resulting colour (try and steer away from these).
Use moisturiser only on your elbows, knees and backs of heels. Couture has one called Satin Body Drench, but your normal one will be fine.
(If you use a very heavy type of moisturiser you might want to change to a lighter one a few days before your tan, I find that they can sit in your skin and act as a barrier to the tan.)

The day of your tan wash again but use just water, use soap/body wash for your "bits n' bobs". Don't use any deodourant or moisturiser, and if possible don't ware make-up. Make sure you wear dark loose clothing and take flip flops.

The next day shower you guide colour off and pat yourself dry. Moisturise with either Couture Satin Body Drench or your favorite moisturiser. You can also use tan extenders, these have tan in them and help your colour stay longer. Couture has one called Bronze Intensifier, which you can use on your face, however other brands do similar products. You will find that your face, neck, and hands will loose the colour first, so if you pop a bit of extender on before you go to bed you should sort that problem out. Exfoliate every other day to ensure that your tan wears evenly.

I hope this helps.

"Xen tan"

I have used every fake tan spray I can think of from Boots. So thought I'd give something a little more expensive a go and saw this on a website! Was a little anxious at using it first and thought I'd mess up as I am no good at putting tan on, especially on my legs and back! So took a while before I plucked up the courage to use the product.

OH MY GOSH! I am so pleased I did use it and never sent it back. The colour is gorgeous and really suits me (I have quite pale skin) there is a tiny smell but it goes after an hour. I never really washed it off the next day and the colour increased and went even darker - which I loved!!!

I have recommended this to all my friends, my mum and people on other websites! I'd definitely recommend using this.
"St tropez"

I had my first st. tropez spray tan at the salon the other day - wan apprehensivbe, but it looked great. I would like to do tanning at home myself, so will read to see what product others advise...

I have been for spray tans at salons before and I don't find it lasts any longer than St Tropez I do at home. I exfoliate for two days (1 per day) before I have my tan and then apply loads of moisturiser whilst skin still wet and my tans lasts just over a week!

It doesn't go dull or flaky if you do this either!

Hope this helps x
"Xen-tan"

Hi,

I have been a fan of Fake Bake for a few years now. Then when I went to get some more Fake Bake from my local beauty salon they didn't have any in the shop, they had Xen-Tan instead, so I purchased Xen Tan, thinking this better be good.

I'm so so impressed! There is only a very, very slight smell at the end of the development time. Application was so easy, and the product went on very evenly. It didn't feel at all sticky and I didn't look like I'd been down the mines before going to bed!

I will recommend it to everyone I know!

Xen-tan is the best fake tan I have ever used, the olive colur is fantastic (I simply look as though I've been on holiday)and it's been voted by Cosmopolitan as the best colour.

Hey, i would recommend using Uber Sassy Celebrity Tan Lotion, it worked so well for me leaving a streak-free tan which looked really natural. You can find the products on their website

"Xen tan "

Hey I've used practicaly every fake tan on the market but have recently discovered Xen Tan which I would highly recommend. The mousse is really easy to apply and drys in almost instantly,it also gives you a olive tan and dosen't smell as bad as the rest of them, oh and it dosen't stain your clothes either! For the face I would recommened Abre Solaire face mist in medium dark, it gives a lovely sunkissed look that looks natural.
"Fake tan! "

Garnier summer body mist spray for medium to dark skin is really good and reasonably priced, it's best used after full application of lotion fake tan, and used on the chest area, as it intesifies the colour, as the chest is always difficult to get as brown aS the rest of the body. The garnier summer body moisturiser is also very good but is a little runny, i would say the best moisturising fake tan is the Nivea one for medium to dark skin, and also the dove. However the piz buin fake tan is brilliant and give an olive colour rather than orange! I rely on either of these tanning lotions and moisturisers!
"Fake tan is the way forward! "
Posted by faketanfanatic 19 December  at  15:06

I have tried so many fake tans, i used Dove for a while and found this to be very good, its an even colour, but it does sometimes appear a tiny bit orange, but with make up over such as bronzing powder it looks good. Fake bake is also quite good, this takes effect instantly, but deepens over a few hours and is a good base colour for tan! It looks quite realistic but i find it stains your hands and also if you accidently leave a splodge here and there its hard to remove, also, it washes off in the shower, which is not good! But when used on my face it did make my skin look fantastic and was lovely to put make up over.
I used sunbeds a while ago, but became very concious of the fact that they are very dangerous so decided to just use fake tan! I have had a spray tan which cost me ten pound and it looked fantastic! Everyone thought id been on holiday, but when a spray tans wearing off this isnt a good look, blotchy, patchy and staining around the neck and armpits!
Anyhow, theres a ramble on fake tans for anyones that interested!

"Tanning moisturisers"
Posted by colgirl1 14 September  at  00:33

I like the moisturisers with a small amount of tanning ingredient the best - Garnier Summerbody is a good one, at the moment i'm using Nivea Sunkissed Body - the only one i wasn't keen on was Johnsons.

im a beaution and i think that a calafornia tan is the best because it blends to your skin tone ,a spray tan lasts from up to 4 days dxepending on how many times you have a bath!lol it then starts to rub off gradually i hate this period, every tan rubs off and thats the price you pay for having a nice tan
"The best tan to use"
Posted by olivia1147 4 June  at  21:06

I have tried every false tan product under the sun!. Dove is the best on the market - I use medium to dark and wouldn't recommend the light one it will take ages to develop. You would probably need to apply it for 3-4 days per week to keep it looking good and you dont have to pay that much attention on how you put it on. YOu may get patches on your knees/ankles hands but exfoliate the particular area with a good exfoiliator and apply somemore which will blend any white bits for the next day. It does rub off quite easily after a soak in the bath (but doesnt wash off). My friend who has used St. Tropez for years has started using it and said that she has had several comments from colleagues at work saying how well she looks and how natural it looks and doesnt have brown marks all over the bedding anymore! so thats my tip to you.
"Fake bake"
Posted by morganayre 29 May  at  23:24

hi i have had two fake bakes at two different salons priced about £15 the tan is sprayed on and gives a instant colour which develops darker during the night, i found you would have to stay in to avoid strange looks, you wash off the top colour in the morning whitch leaves the developed colour underneath, the tan lasted for about a week, it takes a bit of cleasing to remove the patches around the neck and armpit areas. what was the dream tan like
"Use the same as the spray tanning machines"
Posted by littlediva1 19 May  at  17:00

I have tried all the famous false tan... st tropez, fake bake etc etc. the best by far is a brand called california tan which you can buy at any 'tanning shop' outlet up and down the country. I have one spray tan a month and top up for the california tan spray which is the same spray tan solution that the spray tan machine uses. its £19.99 a bottle but more than worth it!! don't waste anymore money on st tropez!
"How much"
Posted by bopsterpie 27 April  at  14:31

I'll have to try this one too - I use He-Shi at the moment - I know dodgy name but it really works as well. It is very thin like water and goes on really even. It turn a lovely brown colour not orange. I'm just 1/2 way through my bottle but I may have to try this. How much does it cost?
"I've tried them all...."
Posted by tasha127 21 February  at  16:59

I've tried pretty much every self tanner out there. I had a spray tan recently but didn't like it at all, it was too dark (and very orange), smelly and stained my clothes and bedding etc. Also, it cost 30 quid... It didn't last any longer than my usual tanner, I normally use St Tropez. A friend of mine has been raving about a tanner called Famous Daves Tanner, I've just bought some but haven't tried it yet. Apparently it's fab, doesn't smell at all and looks very natural (my friend's lovely and brown, I'm orange!!). I'll try it this weekend, hopefully it's as good as their website says it is! xx
