Bizutage, hazing or ragging in some french schools
"Bizutage", or initiation rituals imposed on first-year students in some French Universities, was banned by Ségolène Royal's law in 1998. However, bizutage is not completely extinct. See a number of websites like SOS Bizutage (which has a section in English). If your daughter or your son, or a friend, plans to study one or more years in France, be careful. Some schools organize "week-ends d'intégration" (known as "wei"), which are often bizutages in disguise. Liquor flows freely, bizuts (boys) and bizutes (girls) are humiliated by the older students ("anciens"), forced to eat disgusting foods, to obey even the most stupid orders, sometimes to undress, to simulate sex etc. Clearly, in some case, bizutage has become a tolerated form of sexual harassment. In SOME schools, not all 'wei" are bizutages. But it is almost impossible to know before you join one of these sessions what is going to happen. Bizutage also exists in a number of Continental countries, Belgium, The Netherlands, Sweden, Spain etc. And of course in the US, although hazing has been officially banned by a number of states.
