| Thread started by: | "Anyone work in childcare?" Posted by Theraze 15 February at 16:02
I was just wondering what the wages are like? Whatever they are I'd still love to do it, I just need to know if i'll have to take on an extra job on the side. All I've heard is bad opinions so far of childcare salaries! Can anyone help?

I worked with children for a few years and really enjoyed it the money wasn't brilliant but what job has great money I think job satisfation is the main thing and to enjoy what you do .So long as its worth your while do it. Trust me every day is different and i hope tp go back to it when my kids are older Thanx and good luck!!!As a part time job the salaries are fine especially as you get paid through the holidays too !!

I work in a day nursery, and all the staff there get paid £5.35 per hour, which is minimum wage, and this is regardless of how trained they are. I have a level three qualification, and I think that this wage is rubbish considering this. I am now doing a Foundation Degree so that I can get a higher paid job. Good luck xx

Hi theraze, Trained for three years to get my diploma in childcare as well as doing many other qualifications on the side. Lot of hard work!! Got my first job as a qualified childcare worker in aug. I worked with babies under a year. Worked 8hr day + 1hr lunch and received 340 per week. I would do it if i was getting 100 a week. Although its hard work that isnt often recognised enough it is extremely rewarding and no matter how bad or tiring your day has been you cant wait to see those little faces the following morning.

I've been researching childcare as I'm about to have a baby and I got chatting to a childminder mast week who told me that it seems that regardless how high the fees are, the nannies themselves don't get paid that much at all, which is wrong given what an important job they do. I suppose if you pick your area well you might get a bit more. Sorry, that was quite depressing! best of luck, i really don't know very much about it, but that's what I learnt. Like you say, you could always do something else alongside, but then you'd be tired during the day for the children.
