Redundancy

I have just been made redundant and wanted advice on how to make the most of the situation. The only things I really have to pay is my rent and my car. I have tried searching for jobs and applied for loads but they either haven't come back to me or I have been told the positions are filled. I was on the verge of buying a house with my boyfriend when I got made redundant so we have had to put all plans on hold for at least 6 months. Does anyone have advice as to what I could do to make the most of the situation I am in?

Redundancy

In many ways I can't help you Angelsammy but just wanted to let you know you're by no means alone. My position has been made redundant and tomorrow I have two preliminary interviews with other departments to see if I am suitable for the roles they have available. If they think so, they'll include me on their short list for interview - yet more waiting - but if not, tomorrow will be my last day with a company I've worked for for almost 20 years.

It's all the more scary knowing I have only another 9 years to retirement so finding another job could be even more difficult.

My advice, keep your pecker up. You are still the same wonderful person you always have been and there is an employer out there that will recognise that fact. I suggest you use whatever agencies are available to you - get them to do the looking - as well as searching online and in local papers. Things I'm sure you've already tried. Is it possible to get temporary work (or even part-time) to take the pressure off while looking for a permanent job? Do you have skills you could use to work from home?

I could well be joining you in the queue at the Job Centre (although they probably don't call it that any more!). Let us know how you get on.

Kind regards,

CarolUK
