"Diesel or petrol - can anyone help?"
Posted by glendale1 15 December  at  15:25

Hi,

I'm buying a new car in the new year and am thinking of swapping to diesel, for economic reasons. My round trip to work is about 80 miles, which costs me over £70 each week on fuel at the moment. My husband is convinced that it would be cheaper and better for the environment to go for a diesel...
Has anyone had any experience of this?

Many thanks

I got a Diesel myself and I know that a petrol engine of the same size takes about 1 1/2 times the fuel of a diesel. (I hope you understand what I mean )
With your quite long way to work it will be cheaper to take a diesel anyways. As though a diesel-engine holds much longer.
I dont know about the tax in Britain. What do you have to pay for a diesel/petrol -engine per 100ccm tax?

definately. It's better for the environment and makes more economic sense, even though it might be slightly more expensive to buy, it will pay for itself in the long run.
"Sale value"

the other thing is that diesel cars hold their sale value much better than petrol, which might be something to think about in the long term...
"That was quick!"

thanks very much!

We had our first diesel about 6 years ago, it was definately more efficient than our old car, which had the same sized engine.
Things seem to have moved on now and petrol engines do loads more miles to the gallon (am quoting my brother here, don't know much about this stuff myself, but he's a mine of info!).
We still have a diesel, mainly for the green factor apart from anything else
