Bang the drum for pete
I think that Pete Doherty is an absolutely phenomenal singer / songwriter / person. Not that Id ever condone what he does in his private life, but there are a few questions that need to be asked, and answered. For example, why is he being pigeonholed by the media on account of an addiction which many musicians, actors and models before him are guilty of? Over a decade ago, practically every leading Britpop band in the UK had members doing exactly the same things with exactly the same drugs. So what is it that makes Pete Doherty stand out? Is it because hes so callous and casual about it? Or is it the fact that he is the epitome of non-conformity, the man who ... off celebrity magazines and tabloid articles something awful, simply by doing what he wants, where he wants, when he wants, without adhering to what have become socially acceptable norms? We live in a culture perpetuated by celebrity obsession, self-image, clothes, facelifts and tummy-tucks, chain junk-food retailers (you know who you are) at loggerheads with government policies against obesity; a culture so convinced of its own virtuosity that it is more backward than most would dare to admit. Confronted by a man who stands in the way of everything that culture embodies, how many people are willing to simply say, ... this? I know which side Im on.
