How to help a friend in a breakup?

One of my good friends has just been in a break up, and it was completely unexpected for him. How can you help when one of your best friends is going through a break up. His name is Carl, he's 22 years old. I just wish i could make him feel just a little bit better. I think this is his first real BIG break up, you know them, the one's we all have that wakes us up, makes us a bit tougher AT THE END!!..i just wanty to hel him in any way possible but by doing so not belittling him and not patronising him.

hiya. i broke up with my boyf of 4 yrs in Oct 06. i was only 20 and i had completely grown up with him. although the decision was mine, i regretted it but he wudnt take me back. i was devestated. all i needed though - was time. my friends all rallied round and took my mind of things as much as poss but when i wanted to cry about him, they lent me a shoulder and a kind ear. it really helped and i came thorugh it a much stronger person. im now 10000% happy with my new bloke who iv bin with 4 just unda 1 yr. ur mate will be happy again v soon and u sound like a gr8 mate just 4 posting this! much love to ya both x
