Mirena - problems and advantages...please help!

Hi! I had the Mirena put in August 2007. Since then, I haven't had a period (except for a few irregular ones at the start, which I understand is quite normal. I've also experienced that I have felt depressed and suffered from insomnia - originally, I thought I was suffering these symptoms because of other things (a close friend died, trouble with a flatmate and a lot of stress at work!). And I think they were the primary reasons, but I'm worried that the underlying reason for my depression and insomnia might be the mirena. I had the mirena fitted because of problems I had with my periods - I used to collapse and suffer from dizzy spells, along with intense cramps and vomitting, throughout my periods. I'm trying to weigh up the pros and cons as to whether I should have the mirena removed - there's a slight chance I will still get the cramps and dizziness, but my thinking at the moment is that I will cope with that a lot better than I am coping with this depression! I hope I don't sound too miserable as I'd hate to think of myself like that! Trying to think of the positives! Has anyone else experienced this or heard about it in friends and relatives? Thanks for your help, and taking the time to read this blabber! x

Mirena

Hi
I have had a Mirena now for almost 3 years and have not had any problems with depression or any other symptoms you are experiencing.
In fact I think that any irregularity or discomfort that I had before is completely gone.
I have only had a positive experience, but that said the mirena does release a small amount of hormone so I would sugest discussing the depression with your GP
Is the depresseion a constant or is it cyclical? Almost like a bit of PMT?
If you have recently had a child I would also not rule out a bit of post natal depression.

Good luck
Hope you feel better soon
