Do people date more than one person?

I'm new to the dating thing, and I've recently met someone. We get on really well, share loads in common, have had three fantastic dates, and have just organised the fourth. Have had a few cheeky snogs, held hands, but nothing more! (He's a bit of a gent!)
I was talking to my friend, and she says people in London all date like the Americans do (date loads of people), whereas another friend totally disagreed.
I'm not dating anyone else, and I'd like to think the man I'm dating isn't either.
So - do people date more than one person when it gets past three dates?

I just know that I wouldn't. Why follow trends ?
Just do what feels right for you and don't settle for being treated in any way less than is acceptable to you.
Don't lower your standards for the masses.
Leave them to do their own thing.
I'd rather be safe sexually than conform and risk who knows what.
