Hair dye wont stay in then turns reddish

I have thinning fine dirty blonde hair.

I desire to have dark brown hair but everytime I dye my hair dark, the dye washes out after a few washes, and all that is left is a reddish tint to my dirty blonde hair. I hate that!

Ive tried using hair dyes with a blue base and also tried putting red-out in the mix, as well as tried protein fillers before the dying. Ive gone to a salon and still the same problem.

The dye doesnt stay in and my hair gets reddish or orangish.

Any advise?

I had naturally dark brown hair, but began dyeing it at home to cover my SILVER part about 6 years ago. It was getting too dark (grabbing the color) and I went to a salon in '06 for an all over permanent lignter brown color and honey highlights. The higlights were too brassy. I kept trying to get brown put through to cover, and it worked once, but the rest of the time, would fade off or not cover at all. I thought maybe the colorist wasn't using enough pigment, so I asked her to put more. That worked better. Hoever, on July 16th of this year ('08) I had her put a new permanent brown color that is not supposed to turn brassy, all over. It was SO dark that I was shocked! I thought it would finally stay on and be dark! I waited two days to wash, and a week later, it was starting to lighten. Now, it has a brassy tone again (before it was "ashy", almost purple in the light.) I am So frustrated! Maybe the developer wasn't strong enough to let the pigment go into the hair cuticle (for both of us)?

My hairs dark brown and i wanted lighter high lights in it. However, after a few weeks it kept turning orange! My hair dresser told me its because i have a slight reddy tinge to my hair..
To be honest.. i've just had to let it grow out coz i've spent so much money on hair products trying to make it stay :|
But if you really want to have dark hair, i suggest trying different shampoos and conditioners because thats what usually takes the colour out x

Tough one

Few tips that may help: don't wash your hair for 2 days before using hair dye, don't use conditioner either. After the dye, don't use a shampoo, just rinse it with water.
It want harm if you keep the dye for a bit longer. You don't have to worry about chemical burn - most of the available products "deactivate" after hour.

Hi, i have people asking me this problem all the time!! When you go to boots or where ever you get a box colour from, they generally put 12% peroxide in the box.

EG You have dark hair with grey and want to permanently cover this. Although initially the colour is dark the percentage of peroxide somewhat lifts your colour underneath this colour ,resulting in a chestnut or tobacoie look. Here are some tips

1 castings or movida are strong semi permanents and have more grabbing power than permanent colours with higher peroxide, If you can use diacolor, even better.

2 if you use permanent but want no lift, use 6% or water the box colour peroxide down to half before you mix

3 Ever wondered why some people with dark hair end up orange from a box? The reason is peroxide is not strong enough for depth of hair x x

I find that sometimes a semi in between will enhance the colour and won't make it too porous by continuously covering with permanent. Just remember though that semi permanents do tend to come out 1 shade darker at first, and if you really hate the warmth stick to a basic base shade, if you like the warmth, aubergine or plummy colours don't tend to go gingery as much as reds, but be warned, never use yourself on blonde hair and just remember the warmer reds or plums will fade. x x
