How much hair, bikini area?

I've been single for ages and have just met someone.
Thing is, things have got a bit forest like down there and I need to start all over again with waxing and trimming. I've never really trimmed a great deal or waxed much beyond the sides before and hadn't thought much about it. Maybe I should have, maybe the guys I've been with before just didn't want to mention there was too much hair?
So I was wondering, how much do women normally leave? What's normal?? How much hair makes you seem like a hippy? Should you just leave a strop in the middle??
how do you manage during the in-between time when it's started to grow through but is too short to wax?? Surely there are times when there is hair growing through??
And what do you do about stubble?
Argh, it's a minefield! And I don't want to scare or put off the next bloke?
