| Thread started by: | "Is anyone else over 40 and trying for a baby?" Posted by fringegirl 18 March at 18:32
I am 42 and have been trying for nearly 2 years for a baby. I had many tests and x-rays and the nhs consultant thought I had one blocked tube and was not ovulating.
Despite this I got pregnant and was 5 weeks along when I lost the baby at 5 weeks and had a miscarriage.
I am now going privately to have fertility treatment as the nhs consultant was very unhelpful and virtually told me I had no chance of having a baby. I was actually 3 weeks pregnant before I even realised as my periods often have gaps of up to 50 days between.
Can anyone else share similar experiences?

Hi,
I have had a HSG which showed both my tubes were clear. I have 2 children already but I have a new husband and we would love another baby, we have been trying for 18 months with no luck.
I suppose we just need to keep on trying, but it kind of takes over your life.
Jayne.

I have been trying to conceive for the last 3 years, had many operations in last few years including removal of ovary and tube and fibroids. I had really belived my chances were over and was in hospital yesterday scheduled for an operation to find out why things are still not happening, just before i went for surgery the nurse asked me to do a pregnancy test, low and behold it said postive. Me and my husband have been on cloud nine since then and still find it hard to believe. I am 5 weeks pregnant and am sad to see that you lost your baby at that time. I have never been pregnant before and truely never believed i would be so there must be hope for us all, after all I only have one ovary and tube......

Hello Dawn
Well, I'm just discovered today I'm pregnant at the grand old age of 44. I have a 5 year old son. Shocked but also delighted.
Hope to keep in touch.
Kind regards

although i myself arent in my 40s, my mum was when she fell pregnant with my brother who is now 10 years old. she was sterilised when she was 25 due to health reasons, and because she was so young and already had myself and my other brother she just went along with it. anyway she always regretted it and so her and my dad finally went to see a doctor who referred them to the hospital.
she had and exploritory operation and they said that they would reverse it but that she would only have 30% chance of falling pregnant and then when they did a sperm count on my dad (not nice to think about haha)they found it was low which reduced their fertility even more so.
to cut a really long story short they did the operation anyway and 10 weeks later they were expecting my brother who is still adorable even now hes 10!
just wanted to give you a positive story, dont know whether it helps, but i find sometimes its nice to hear good news because it can make you much positive about yourself. if its meant to be it will be! GOOD LUCK XXX

Hi so glad to hear of others trying for a baby at our age. I will be 42 in May and my husband of 1 year is 30. I have two girls 9 and 11. I thought I was finished having babies and my husband and I discussed it 2 years ago and we decided we were already a family and we should be happy as we were. But I always had this feeling that I wanted HIS baby. Well I've been off the pill for 6 months, my periods are regular every months till this month I was 8 days late. The home tests said negative so I had a blood test which was also negative. Then this morning day 9 there they were, soooooo disappointing. I feel like my body is letting me down after being so regular and reliable all these years. I ovulate on time as I have ovulation pain so am aware of it. We try at the right time. I don't know whether to be worried already(about not falling) when I read about others like yourself trying for 2 years, I don't know how you cope. Good on you hang in there I'm sure it will happen for you. I will keep everything crossed. Does anyone know whether having a younger man helps your odds on falling pregnant and does it contribute to the risk in birth defects. Thanks

Its so nice for someone not to think that its crazy to have a baby now I am 40. I have been with my partner for 11 years and he is 11 years younger than me I have a 13 year old son from my first marriage and we have an 8 year old daughter together. When we first talked about having another child it was scary but also really exciting. We spoke to the kids and they were over the moon. As naive as i am i thought it would happen straight away, now in our fourth month of trying. I too like you know when i am coming up to that time but no luck so far. It just seems like you spend so much of your time trying not to get caught, and when you really want to it seems like an uphill struggle
