"How do i find a doctor?"

Hi everyone,

I just found out (like 2 hours ago) that I'm pregnant. My husband doesn't even know because he is out of town but back tonight. I think I'll do another at-home test in a minute, just to be sure because I've felt period cramps all week but I'm late and I'm never late... and the two pink lines are there. I also see from this forum that sometimes cramping is normal.

I was wondering if someone could give some advice on what I should do next and how I can get a doctor? I've only been in the UK (London) for a few months and I don't have a doctor here or even any friends here to ask what to do. I've looked for doctors online, but not really finding anything. Do I just go to a clinic somewhere? Or just go to the nearest hospital (I don't even know where that would be but assume there is something in the area). Do I need a GP or another type of doctor? Some people in this forum are mentioning midwives, so how do you find one of those and is that a better route?

Sorry for the basic of questions, but I'm feeling kind of stupid right now. Because my husband and I have moved around quite a bit the last 10 years, I really haven't been around anyone that has had kids and since I'm not from here, I don't know where to start. I'm not even sure if I get free medical here or not (I have a Swiss passport).

Thanks for any help or advice you can provide and good luck to you all!

Hi Cathy, I see you posted your message a while ago so I hope you've got sorted out by now! If not, then just go along to any NHS doctor's surgery (clinic), it doesn't matter which one. If you have a Yellow Pages phone directory, they'll be listed in there. When you book an appointment, make sure you ask whether it's NHS or not (if it's private, you'll have to pay). Otherwise you could just go to a hospital and ask them where the nearest doctor is.
