Hi,

Need some advice or just to scream.

I have a coil fitted and last October fell pregnant, all the health officials claim I was extremely unfortunate, very rarely happens.I had this pregnancy terminated. Now we're in January I've been feeling queasy again and just done a pregnancy test and found i'm pregnant again (coil still fitted) Have I been naive, could the test being positive be a carry over from the October/Nov pregnancy? I feel stupid going back to my doctor and telling them this - feel so stupid!! If I arranged for a private termination would it go onto my medical records with my GP? I wish this was not happening - advice please.

Just a question-are you a qualified doctor?

I have worked in clinics/hospital and am a qualified nurse and what have said on this post (about coils) and some other threads are not quite accurate/and sometimes exaggerated.

I'm not getting at you, its just a fair question.

Coils are a horrible method of contraception. They are infact not contraceptives at all, they are arbotificants.

This means that they do not prevent the sperm from fertilising the egg (ie conceiving), but once the fertilized egg travels down to the womb and tries to implant the coil acts like an irritating foreign object in your womb and (only sometimes) prevents the fertilised egg from implanting, and results in a mini abortion very often.

The information that is given to women is that you might have 'unusually heavy periods' sometimes after fitting a coil. Well guss what girls, this is a little more than just a heavy period. Your body tries to hold on to the fertilised egg (aka human being in its earliest form), in that it tries very hard to take hold in your womb, and sometimes manages to take hold for a few days or even longer, until your so called 'period' comes along.

Added to that, it does not even seem particularly reliable.

Sorry maizy to hijack your thread, but knowledge is power.

sorry siobhan but i have to say that is compleat nonsence!
if fitted correctly it one of the most reliable forms of controception.
the egg is not fertilze when using a coil as the coil kills the sperm
arbotificants.do not exist!
the hormanal coil just works like the pill and the non hormoanl one the copper in the coil just kills the sperm.
i have had an accident with my coil but this was due to it not being fitted properly.

I am no fan of the coil, but i have to say, your facts are useless unless you give the girls the source to check it out for themselves.
I have noticed that you put a lot of your theories across as facts. I have an abortion leaflet at home from the family planing clinic saying specifically that this is not the case. I have read in other places that there is no definative answer to how the coil works. If you do a quick google search there are various explainations, so noone can be sure. Sorry to sound petty, but it winds me up. Knowledge is only power if you know the whole story.
"Facts and sources"

Yes, fair enough I have to name my sources

The main source is the following:

Second Report on IUDs, Dec. 1978, U.S. Dept. of HEW, Food & Drug Administration Document 017-012-00276-5

From the website: http://www.abortionfacts.com/online_books/love_the-m_both/why_cant_we_love_them_both_19.asp

" Is an IUD a contraceptive or an abortive agent?

Until recently, almost all scientific papers had agreed that its effect was to prevent the implantation of the tiny new human being into the nutrient lining of the uterus; an abortive action. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated in an official report that its effectiveness is "in direct proportion to the quantity and quality of the inflammatory reaction to various types of IUDs"...and states that there "is one common thread . . . " They all "interfere in some manner with the implantation of the fertilized ovum in the uterine cavity." Second Report on IUDs, Dec. 1978, U.S. Dept. of HEW, Food & Drug Administration Document 017-012-00276-5

A detailed report in a Planned Parenthood publication in 1989 claimed that a high percentage of its action was the prevention of fertilization. IUDs are ontraceptives, not Abortifacients: A Comment on Research and Belief, I. Sivin, Studies in Family Planning, Vol. 20, No. 6, Dec. 89

The above report, however, has not been duplicated and therefore has not presented enough evidence to change the conventional wisdom that the IUD is almost always an abortive agent"

another source from Physicians for Life

http://www.physiciansforlife.org/content/view/182/-36/

very good and very detailed with reference to all the relevant clinical studies.

i too have read that when having a heavy period with the coil fitted it is more than likely to be what was the start of a pregnancy.

I have no doubt you have read that, that wasn't the point I was making.
Can i also apologise to maizy, i didnt mean for your page to become a debate about how the coil works. Considering it didn't work at all for both of us its probably not the most appropriate topic!
"What a joke"

This website is just a joke, we are supposed to be here supporting one another when all we can do is argue.

I personally don't give a monkey if that is how the coil works! If it worked at all it would be a bonus!

The fact still remains that it didn't work for many of us and we have all had either Babies that weren't planned for or abortions.

I had an abortion and turned out fine. Other people have had the baby and have also turned out fine .. lets just try and stay focused on how well Maizy will be depending on the route SHE chooses.

I truly feel that we are putting people off posting on this site because they know that they won't get the support they need.

So for all the Pro Life campaigns that happen on this site just imagine all the people whose life is collapsing around them right now who don't feel they can talk openly about THEIR feelings .. not the feelings of the baby ..

This is a delicate issue, no one would advise to have an abortion if it was not what the girl wanted to do, we are mostly all kind hearted, responsible adults who value life. The things is most of us who have been through and abortion also value and understand the girls feelings to.

I only personally know one women who had the coil fitted. she fell pregnant and they couldnt find it, typical! she kept her baby but at i think it was 21 weeks she started bleeding, she lost the baby in the end as they found that the placenta have grown with the coil inside which caused her to lose the baby. this has put me off one totally and am surpreised at the replies saying they also got pregnant on it. im gonna go for the implant thing

Hello,

Im sorry to hear about your situation. me and my friend had the coil fitted about a year ago..and guess what - we are both pregnant. My friend has decided to keep hers, but i am alone and pregnant with twins (u might have read my post below)and i have decided to have an abortion.I found out afterwards that mine was fitted incorrectly, so it may be worth seeing if this has happened to you.
There is no shame in your situation, you did what you could to prevent it, but sometimes things go wrong. If you really do not want your doctor involved, it may be worth looking into a private abortion. Saying that, I dont see why you should have to folk out hundreds of pounds to avoid a stigmatization you do not deserve. Anyone with any sense won't judge you for this.
Can I ask if they took out your coil after your first termination? I am confussed over whether they will take mine out or not.
"Thanks for the reply"
Posted by maizy2 22 January at 18:13

They said after my first termination that the coil was sitting low in the womb hence the pregnancy taking hold at the top. They tried to take the coil out but couldn't get hold of it so it remained in place. The doctor was due to fit a new one this week ironically. I thought lightening couldn't strike twice but how wrong you can be. I have made a private appointment for the termination, not sure I can cope with telling my Doctor, it's expensive but a quick option without judgement. Good luck with yours.

ive been in the same situation and concive while using a coil then had a termination. dont feel bad about it it does happen. what sort of coil is it? hormonal or non hormonal? i had a new non hormonal coil fitted thats a bit smaller than the regular one and ive had no problems to date. go back to your doctor and just explane whats happend, you havent been careless, you might just need a diffrent type of coil.xxx

Hi there ..

I went Flipping mental when I found out I was pregnant with a coil fitted, all I cared about was finding out who was to blame.

1st thing, unless the abortion failed (just read an article about this happening, however it is one in a million chance of this) then it is highly unlikely if not impossible for the pregnancy hormones to show this many months after.

2nd thing ... Don't feel stupid about it .. how could you have possibly prevented this? You have a coil for a reason and it failed.

Now perhaps you are extremely fertile, but that is hardly a reason to boycott your Doctor.

Go back and talk to him, find out if he has experience this before or could help you find out why this has happened ... obviously this is not going to be an easy ride for you hun.

Make sure they help, if they don't come back on and try and I will help find an authority that can.

I really feel for you .. all I could think for weeks was "It was not my fault"
