I want to give my son a dummy to help him get to sleep better but I've heard that it can be bad for breastfeeding (which I'm currently doing). Is this true?

I agree that dummies are a great help getting baby to sleep. It works a treat with our Chloe.
With respect to breastfeeding, dummies don't really seem to cause a problem and "nipple confusion" seems to be a bit of a myth. Chloe had problems latching on when she was born so we had to give her a bottle. I was nervous about nipple confusion but while we were seeing various consultants to fix the latch issue they also recommended dummies and told me about the myth.
The occupational therapist told me about a study where newborns were given 4 different nipple types in the same day and had no problems adapting. Basically, bottle-feeding uses less muscles and easier for the baby so they may have a preference for bottles but that's all.
In our case the good news was that using bottles and dummies helped our baby develop the cheek muscles she needed to latch on properly and by 3 weeks was exclusively breastfeeding.
I've found breastfeeding to be much more confusing, complex and therefore stressful than I expected so I created a survey at (copy and paste): http://www.opiniondb.com/DoSurveyList.aspx?id=99aa-f44d -a5e3-40bc-8bd0-3be1a0143748
Somebody else has also created a survey about dummies (pacifiers) at: http://www.opiniondb.com/DoSurvey.aspx?id=1a4f77fe--621 9-420e-ad86-e2d8f90eacb8
