The World health organization recommends 2 years minimum for your baby's health long term and also for your health.
Apparently the longer you breastfeed the less chance of breast cancer.
In most countries mothers let the kids choose.

Whenever you want to stop

Start weaning whenever it no longer suits you to feed. I have had six children including twins. They were weaned : l year, 1 year, 1 year (all because I wanted my chest back to myself!!) then for number 4 it was eight weeks because she couldn't do it and was starving to death so had to put her on bottle, then with the last two I breast fed them as twins together for 21 months and then sadly one died in an accident so breastfed the surviving twin until she was four years old, and no not because I was weirdo or silly sod but simply because I had decided as they were twins to give them an extra year on the breast if they wanted it, ie until they were two, however when Martha died, her surviving twin didn't want to stop feeding and we were so worried she would be upset if I stopped as she had lost half of her very being. Anyway crafty sod would never have stopped until I got really worried that she would be feeding whilst going to school so I told her on her fourth birthday I wouldn't be allowed to feed her any more, she accepted it just like that, wished I'd tried that tactic earlier ha ha. However she is now eleven and perfectly normal as are all the others. Stop when you want to darling WHATEVER AGE

Ridiculous

hiya just ignore what people tel you about to breast feed upto 2 years ridiculous they probably have'nt got kids or have never breast fed, youdo what ya need to till the baby starts taking an interest in food like trying to grab food of ya plate or starts waking in the night when before has been sleeping perfectly well, then just try baby with a couple little teaspoons at first and let baby lead,.................2 years daft sods!!

I don't think they are daft at all

to breastfeed for as long as that, it is a proven fact breast milk is the best thing to boost your babys immunity ,i think as well as feeding solids you should breastfeed if you and your baby are both happy of course, its comments like that that put women off breastfeeding for as long as they feel is right for them. You should get your facts right.

When to wean

the AAP said at least 12 months and after that whenever the mother and child are ready. Mine were 5 months, 13 months, 9 months,9 months, and the other 3 weren't breastfed.

Re"when do i start weaning"

I good time to start weaning your baby from breastfeeding is between 9-18 months.
