What do vegans eat?

Hi all, I've often wondered what vegans eat? Sorry if this seems like a really stupid question but how do you manage? It must be really difficult to find suitable dishes when you go to a restaurant for example. I often eat "vegetarian" and when I've eaten out I nearly always end up with egg or cheese in my dish.

Vegan books to tempt the asking.

Some good vegan titles are 'New Vegan' by Lorna Sass, (which has some glorious photographs) 'Fat Free and Easy' by Jennifer Raymond who shows good economy to her food creations.
Leah Leneman 'Vegan Cooking for Everyone' generous and plentiful recipes.

Try not to be over adventurous and gather to much information as I did by buying cookery books, on the subject- get to know the basic meals before the other more complicated. A simple notepad could store all favorite recipes. Or your facility on the computer.

Hope this has helped.

Vegans eat alot!

Hey, not a stupid question at all; as a vegan I am always asked that. Truth is we eat alot, I don't feel and never have felt deprived though I admit to feeling a little disappointed in selections at restaurants... All fruits and vegetable, all kinds of sauces and condiments are vegan, tofu/soy, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, and grains; wheat, rice, oats, barley... There are great vegan cheeses and plenty of meat substitutes. When your out get a grain and veggie dish, veggie or bean soup, salad. Many pasta dishes are vegan simply ask for no cheese. Yes, it is an adjustment but it is very healthy and definitely doable. Pick up a vegan cookbook or two and try at home, the dishes are delicious!!!

Hi happycamper

Thanks for answering my question! Now you've listed things, it's made me realise that there's a fair lot to eat. I'll have a look for a book next time I'm in the library.

Me too, thanks

Thought it was just fruit, veg and dust but sounds good, esp for fatfighters like moi!
