"Underactive thyroid gland." Posted by buttercup37 2 June at 11:04
I could be wrong, but I think if your thyroid is underactive that there is little you can do about it apart from avoid certain vegetables (cauliflower, I think, is one to be avoided), but do have a regular blood test and take the medication.
I have been thyroid underactive for years, have a blood test every six or twelve months, and am currently prescrived 75mg. Thyroxine daily.
I'm three stone overweight, but I think that's more to do with my enjoyment of food, rather than the thyroid.
Best of luck.
Marcia.

"Weight and an underactive thyroide gland" Posted by funschine 7 October at 23:09
wow! thats a lot of responses to my first posting. Sorry that you are all having the semilar difficulties as I am but I am glad that I am not alone. I dont know about you guys, but i have tried and tried to speak to my doctor about getting help or advice or something to help me loose weight. But I just don't think that they are listening to me. I am on 100mg thyroxine for the last 8 years. Now i feel really scatter brained, can't often get my words out, have really bad skin, otfen feel like there is a pressure on my throat and cant keep my weight under control. Yet my blood test says I'm fine. I have now increased my thyroxine by 25mg (I know I shouldn't) but I feel much better for it! A year ago my doctor suggested a wheat free diet and that worked for a while. I have lost a stone in a few months. I did put that all on again though since I started getting symptoms though. If anyone here eats a lot of whaet and has the willpower, I strongly suggest you try wheatfree for a while.

"Underactive thyroid gland" Posted by florag39 15 February at 22:33
Hi there, I have recently been diaganosed. I am really struggling with my weight, I have also been feeling very down. I am trying really hard for it not to get the better of me. My diet and excerise are both good, but my gp tells me to be a little more patient and that my thyroid should regulate with the increase of my medication. I read a message on this forum the other day which has given me hope, it was from a lady saying that she managed to lose 3 stone while having an underactive thyroid. I am away with my husband for the weekend, but when I get back I intend to up the anty. I will let you know how it goes, but just try not to give up.

"Yes that would be me lol" Posted by littleliz 7 July at 16:17
Hi there. Yes I have an underactive thyroid gland. When you have this and it is not treated you do usually gain a lot of weight although most of it is not actually fat. You didnt say if you are already reciving medication for this. If you are on thyroxine or similar then your weight should gradually go down of its own acord. ofcause things arnt always that simple and if you have only just started taking tablets you may not yet be on the right dosage. Thyroid hormone regulates your metabolism so less thyroid makes you feel tired and sluggish meaning that you probably arnt or wernt getting much exercise. There are a lot of factors to consider. You may find this www.squidoo.com/coldfeet a starting point for information and help with this. A normal 5 fruit/veg per day healthy diet should be all that is neded along with a little exercise but everyone is different. PS Don't eat lots of cabbage, cauliflower or brocoli. These are so not thyroid friendly LOL.

"Kelp will help." Posted by newdawn80 4 July at 01:52
Kelp is a natural remedy for slow thyroid. You can find it in a health food store. You could look it up online for more info. I take kelp for my thyroid problem, it has helped. It is not a quick cure, but will slowly improve thyroid function.

Thank you so much for the information. Does it come in pill form? Did it help your weight loss?

"Kelp pill" Posted by newdawn80 5 July at 01:17
Kelp does come in a pill form. I have not really noticed a difference in weight loss, but I have noticed a difference in energy. I used to wake up tired in the morning after 8 or more hours of sleep. Now I wake up with enough energy for the whole day. I am sure the energy will in turn raise my metabolism. It is a slow process. My natural Doc says it could take 6 months to a year for everything to get regulated. Kelp combined with healthy eating and exercise. I have been taking kelp for about 6 months now. I do notice if I run out of pills my energy level plummets. Recently I have seen wonderful results through the Rice Diet. It may be my thyroid returning to normal finally. I don't know.

"Hi..." Posted by tvwarg 5 April at 13:32
Hi, I've just seen your message, I've had an underactive thyroid for 10 years now and 3 years ago lost 5stone in 9months through Weight Watchers. I was very strict with what I ate as I knew I'd have to work slightly harder than most due to my underactive thyroid. My advice is to look at watch your diet and exercise quite a bit to beat the tiredness an depression that comes with hypothyroidism. All my life, I'd been big and when I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I was told I'd probably put on more weight and not be able to lose it. So with every passing year, I got bigger and accepted that, that was my destiny. I've managed to maintain my weight for 3 years now and believe me, if I could do it then anyone else can and more importantly, you've got to want to lose weight because you want to not because sociey dictates you should be size 10 or 34-26-34! Hope this helps!

"Underactive thyroid" Posted by jellis1 3 July at 19:31
I read your message and I would like to know what a stone is. I am getting very discouraged. I have been diagnosed with Bi-polar Syndrome and I feel that all of the medications the doctor gives me for that plus the hypothyroid diagnosis is making it impossible to lose weight. Any suggestions?
