"My garden!"

Hi there, I'm a (very amateur) gardener and recently moved to the city where all I have is a wee balcony to decorate! Does anyone have any tips on balcony gardening??? I've got a 'herb garden' in a tub and some hanging plants and I'd like to put some trailing plants up the walls but not sure where to start...or what effect the London smog is going to have on them!!

Thanks very much
Josie

Hi Josie

It's lovely to hear what you plan to do. I'm not very experienced at small spaces as we have a long "victorian terraced house" type garden and an allotment. There are some plants which are quite resilient to "smog" and you might find something on the bbc plant finder (through www.bbc.co.uk) or the RHS Plant finder (you'll have to google that one I'm afraid I can't remember).

There are also loads of veggies you can grow if you want in baskets or growbags, you just have to choose the right variety. Salad is always easy and there are a number of tomato varieties (bush/tumbler) which can easily go in a basket or growbag. Dwarf beans too. The only limit is your imagination.

There are a number of people on this forum www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine with experience of growing in small spaces/tubs/baskets etc who can probably give you good advice.

The important thing is to create something you can enjoy.

Best of luck
Amy

the BBC site was excellent -I've got my tomato plant potted and off to buy smog-resistant plants! do you think crawling plants could work around iron railings?
Thanks so much for your help!

Josie
