Airbrushing

Hi, I was just wondering what people's opinions were on airbrushing in magazines.

Do you notice it - does it effect you?
Do you think it's bad or are you not bothered?
Would you be airbrushed if you were going to feature in a magazine?

Would be really interested to learn everyone's views on this. Thanks

Hmmm

Not sure I'm that bothered to notice really. I regard most of them as fake anyway and that's as people never mind their appearances being touched up.

Because I see them as fundamentally fake to start with their appearance doesn't really change that. If it did I might take more notice of them.

I find them mostly sad individuals. Lots of money but no real privacy and the pressure on them to be perfect and to live up to their own adjusted images must be enormous.

Must be hard to have to meet people in real life knowing you can't airbrush reality. Why young girls want to jump on this particular bandwagon is totally beyond my comprehension.
That is even sadder than the poor celebrities themselves.

My view.

I know this question is quite old but im new to this site.

I am a proffesional retoucher, with work featured in magazines a lot.
What people need to understand is that when a photographer takes photos, the camera/lens/lighting makes the image a lot clearer and sharper than your average point and shoot camera, meaning all pores are visible, which is not very flattering to even the slightest blemish. The makeup artists hired for print use certain products (not drugstore products) to also help perfect the skin for such detail.

Ofcourse I notice it, even the most natural retouching is obvious to me
I do not think it is bad, I know there are a lot of people who do not know these people are retouched, and that causes people to feel insecure about themselves as to why they don't look like that.

I used to think that they should put a small disclaimer on images stating the images are retouched, but then where would we stop? in movies where there is a double act shown topless so the model actress don't need to,.. shall we have a disclaimer notice to tell us that too? what about television where the cameras and lighting and makeup are so perfect that we look flawless on television, shall we have noticed to tell us all the details so we feel better about ourselves? no, i think it's ridiculous and people really just need to do things to make themselves feel better and more confident so they don't have a problem viewing these images.
If you were offered to be in a magazine, depending on the magazine and the target audiance, if you refused to be retouched you would not get into that magazine. What good would it be in you were offered the opportunity to be front cover of playboy but denied being airbrushed? you would not get the job, these magazines need to sell and if your images do not meet their requirements, you are not going to make them money.
Retouching was happening a lot longer than people think, people used to retouch in the darkroom, other ways, before digital so it's really not a new thing. just the demand for perfection is higher now.
