has anyone else tried dieting whilst suffering from this condition?
did it make it much harder?

Losing weight whilst suffering from PCOS is harder, but the most effective way is through low-carb (not necessarily Atkins) and low-carber also report a real improvement with the symptoms. Do a search for 'low carb john' as there is info about it on the site. I won't name the site, as it is not my intention to actively promote, as I hate people who spam!
