Gained 4 stone in a year

Hi, I'm new here & need some advice if anyone can help!!
Over the past year, I've been gradually gaining weight -I started at 10st 7lb in July 2006 & as of today am 14st 5lb.
I've tried everything -I've been to the gym everyday for a couple of months, I've tried cutting carbs (this worked for me previously) but found I was waking up with no energy & didn't lose any weight in 3 weeks, I've been to weight watchers, I even had a month where my appetite just went so I wasn't eating much at all, & I've tried taking slimming pills.
My thyroid's been tested & it's fine, & I've seen a nutritionist.
I eat healthily -normally 4 or 5 pieces of fruit plus lots of salad & vegetables & I drink several pints of water but no tea or coffee every day & I go to the gym a couple of times a week as well as making sure I use stairs instead of lifts where possible & do bum clenches etc when I'm stuck in traffic queues or bored at work.
I've also currently given up alcohol (11 days so far), but as yet my weight's still going up! -I've had no size reduction either..

Has anyone had a similar experience?
Can anyone offer any suggestions I haven't tried?

If I don't change weight direction in the next few days, I'm going to have to go & buy a 5th pair of jeans this year & a whole new work wardrode as I've taken up the slack in everything I own. I can't afford to keep doing this!!!!

Thanks
a very distressed merryfay

4 stone put on after quit smoking.

I have started taking my neigbours dog out for a walk for 1 nour 3 times a week, or just go out for a quick walk, try to walk fast for the first 10 mins then walk normaly for 5mins then back to fast for 15 mins it is all good fun.

4 stone

are you on any medication? lots of medicines can cause weight gain like this. it's extremely unlikely that anyone could gain weight this fast just by eating. are you on medicine for epilepsy, depression, or even just the contraceptive pill? i put on 3 stone in three months when i went on medication. when i stopped the medicine, it dropped off just as fast.

The 4 stone shock

Likewise I have gone from 10 stone to 15 stone but over a period of 10 years. My greatest difficulty is motivation. My concern for you is that you seem to be doing a huge amount of work towards a healthy lifestyle, you exercise is superb, however, to gain 4 stone from July 2006 to now makes me wonder whether you don't have a hormone problem or thyroid problem that you may be unaware of. Have you been to see a doctor to have blood tests to have it checked out. There is so much that you are doing which is condusive to losing weight, just a few suggestions, I have found that if I keep a log of EVERYTHING I eat during the day I am often astounded by the little bits here and there that I put into my mouth and don't even register, the only thing that registers is the calories which just creep on up and up. The other idea that I found useful is to serve my food on a sideplate as I know that I have "portion distortion". It is very important, even though I know its a pain in the butt, to measure out your servings e.g. spread a piece of toast as you normally would and then measure our a flat tspn of butter and then spread another piece and you will see the difference. I don't want to knock any diets, however, you need to go for something which suits you. Personally I cannot do diets that rely on "shakes" because I cannot do them for the rest of my life, I have chosen a lifestyle change and have gone with calorie counting. When I was 17 I weight 200 lbs and went on a calorie counting diet 1500 per day and lost 60 lbs in 6 months with no exercise (I was 17 though) but with this diet you have to keep a log. I kept the weight off for more than 10 years then went through a number of failed pregnancies hence the 4 stone gain and have struggled to get back to dieting and I am still struggling. Eventually you get so used to how many calories there are in a slice of bread or say 50 grms of cereal etc it becomes second nature. I recommend you purchase one of Rosemary Conley's cookbooks, also she has her GI diet book which has had outstanding results. Remember you have turned a corner by acknowledgeing you have gained weight because remember you cannot change what you don't acknowledge. Take small steps, make small changes that you can continue, drastic changes are difficult to stick to.

There is also the 80:20 rule which means 80% of the time be absolutely strict and then 20% allow yourself a few indulgences. It may be an idea to chose a day, e.g. Saturday evening where you are going to have a piece of cake or some sort of treat that you love, but do remember portion size.

Keep cleaned crudites, carrots and celery sticks in your fridge and low fat hummous - snack on those when you have your weak moments - mine is when I walk through the door I could devour the fridge but I hit the carrot sticks and 1 tbspn of hummous and that satisfies me whilst I make dinner. I never poor out the olive oil when I e.g. stirfry I always measure - a set of measuring spoons and cups are invaluable. I also purchased the Rosemary Conley scale, its a very helpful tool.

Aim at 1 to 1.5 lbs per week. Remember if you lost 1lb per week you would lose 52 lbs in a year, therefore you can either be 52 lbs lighter by the 10th November 2008 or you could be a few more stones heavier - which will make you happier, I think I know which it will be.

I wish you all the best, you can do this, Rome was not built in a day and there is no rush, every lb will make all the difference. I am with you on this journey as I too have 4 stone to lose so believe me I am not sitting in a glass house throwing stones. Perserve, be positive and stay focused on your strengths and conquer your weaknesses over time.

Cambridge diet

Hi Merryfay

So sorry to hear that you feel so distressed! I understand how you feel. I too have put on a lot of wait in the last 2 years and eventually got so depressed that I made myself get up and do something about it! A friend reccommended the Cambridge diet and so I had a look on the internet and got in touch with a counsellor that lived close to me. Since then it has been fantastic. I lost 8lb in my first week and 4 inches. You have the choice of milkshake or soup 3 times a day, at least 2 ltrs of water and thats it. No counting calories, no weighing, it is so simple! The hardest part is not cheating but i found that because i was so determined to make it work I wasn't bothered about cheating. I believe that it's better than online diets or slimfast or weight watchers because you get to have the support of your counsellor. I don't think I would've stuck to it if I was doing in on my own like with the online diets and slim fast. And with a counsellor, the meetings are 1 on 1 so it's less intimidating than weight watchers.

You do feel hungry for the first 2/3 days but after that your body gets used to it and it gets so much easier.

There are lots of flavours to choose from and after 2 wks you can even choose a chocolate bar instead!

It costs £1.65 per meal, which you get from your counsellor. It sounds a lot (about £35 per week) but your not meant to have anything else so you spend less on shopping and going out.

Don;t get me wrong, it is hard for the first couple of days but it really does get easier. After the first weigh in you will be amazed!

Hope this helps

Please keep us updated on what you decide to do!

Sam

Been there

Hello Merryfay

Sorry to hear you're so unhappy... I gained alot of weight after I had my little boy and I too found it hard to lose the weight. I tried a diet called golower, it's an online diet, and lost three and a half stone in four months. It worked for me.

Keep your chin up, i'm sure there is a diet that will work for you

Chrissie
