Calcium substitutes

hi there,
Not long ago I gave up milk... it sounds daft, but I feel loads better for it, and have more energy.
I want to make sure that I am getting enough calcium in my diet. I have been told that things like nuts are really good... any other ideas?

Calcium substitutes for kids

hi, I have asthama and have been advised to avoid milk and dairy products. I followed your link and was wondering if you had any information on sufficient quantitiesof the substitutes for kids- 8 years old.

Hi sam!

That's the best thing you could have done and no doubt you feel better for it.

The best source of organic calcium which the body can assimilate (which is C++ and not C as found in milk and dairy products) are dark green vegetables including stinging nettles and all types of cabbages (even lighter in colour and including cauliflower).

Also:

- Egg yolks
- Dulse, kelp, Irish moss
- Sesame seeds, other seeds
- Meat next to the bone
- Nuts and unrefined grains
- Black radishes
- Eggshell tea
- Bone broth
- Fish
- Gelatin dishes
- Lemons
- Shredded wheat biscuits
- Whole wheat bread
- Rhubarb

That should cover it. No need to be afraid of lacking calcium.

All the best!
Kit

Calcium substitutes for kids

Hi Kit,
I followed your lead as my daughter, 7 years old, has asthama and has been asked to avoid milk and dairy products. Any suggestions on daily quantities required for growing kids? And also easy things that one can get them to eat!! I can do Soy milk, yogurts and Almonds with my child with ease..
Thanks..

Watch the nuts!

I'm lactose intolerant, something I only discovered 18 months ago. Like you I gave up dairy and found that, not only did I have more energy, but my skin cleared up and I lost weight... bargain! Nuts, specifically almonds and sesame seeds are good sources of calcium, but watch it as they are high in calories. I drink soya milk, which really isn't that bad, and it is calcium enriched. Mineral water is a good source. Oh and make sure you eat plenty of veg!
