Fybromyalgia

Has anyone on here been diagnosed with fybromyalgia? I have had inexplicable pain, feels like muscular pain, for years and this has been the diagnosis. When I read about it, it does not seem like a concrete illness that you can get to grips with. The doctor treating me (internist) has said that there are some medications but recommended regular physio and change in diet first). Just wondering what other people's experiences have been following their diagnosis.

Some hope

Hi. I don't have fibromyalgia but I am working with a number of people who either have been diganosed or probably would be and I am finding it very interesting - so its good to hear your experiences with it - especially as it does seem to vary from person to person. To give you hope: one woman I have just worked with who had it for years has pretty much come through it. Partly it was diet that made a massive difference (some substances seem to cause a tetanising effect in the muscles as I understand it, creating stiffness and tension), partly it was getting educated about what pain actually is and how with something like fibromyalgia (and the hyper vigilance that comes with chronic fatigue) pain signals - which are really danger signals and can anticipate damage as well as signal damage - can get into an increasing cycle in the nervous system that racks up causing greater pain even though there is no more actual tissue damage (if you are interested i can post you a great link to some very accessible lectures on the net) and finding ways to decrease the cycle again - and, very significantly, learning how to move and do things more easily with less tension through a neuro-muscular re-education system I use called the Feldekrais Method (can post a link if you are interested). She was on big drugs for the fibromyalgia and is now off them and her pain is much more within the 'normal' range. so don't despair or think you have to have it for ever! best of luck Victoria

I think i may have fibromyalgia

I have had regular pain in my arms back and legs since being a very small child and so many other symptoms seem to fit. I also think my 5 year old son has it as his legs hurt every day, he asks for a hot water bottle or calpol, he still wets himself and is way over sensitive to pain he also says he is tired a lot.
I am seeing my doctor in a few days time but I think he will just laugh at me. I don't want to be diagnosed with this but it just explains so many things for us that it would almost be a relief in a wierd kind of way. I am really glad you found a doctor to take you seriously.

Some relief

Hi,

I bought some Zanaflex off www.sykeschemists.co.uk - they were cheap and I did get some relief but the other stuff mentioned above is important too. I've had it for 6 months and its slowly getting a little better.

Fybromyalgia

Hi
I have been diagonosed with Fybromyalgia for just over two years now!!! it took ten years to discover what i was suffering from. I had always been extremely fit and played many sports and i can say that the symptoms started at the age of 35. I became increasingly unwell even though i ate reasonably healthy. Chronic fatigue and of course the pain in the past 4 years became especially onbearable. I would say that i have it under control now/ most of the time!!!!

I did not want to go down the root of medications because i believe there are always long term side effects, so here is how i have managed to do it with the help of my doctor and nutrictionist.

Started with a detox for 10days.
Only eat fresh produce, no processed foods. If you cant grow, or catch it dont eat it.
Vary the diet as much as possible.
Keep Tea, coffee and alcohol to a min as they interfer with the absobtion of nutriants that are essential to our well being.

I walk as much as possible and am now still able to play competive golf on a regular basis.

I have a massage once a month.

I still have bad days but not nearly as often as i did an i try to rest as much as possible.
