Echinacea

Hi,
Does anyone knew how long you need to take echinacea for when treating cold symptoms?
I have taken it in the past, and I seem to find that once I stop it the cold just comes back. I imagine its to do with stopping them too early - does anyone have a any advice?
Also I know it's a good natural boost to the immune system. My younger sister is recovering from glandular fever and thinks it might be a good idea to take it on a daily basis. Will this make it ineffective after a while, or will it strengthen her system?
thanks!

Echinacea revisited

I came across this post and wanted to join up just to give this answer. I am a practicing medical herbalist based in Cambridgeshire, so wanted to shed some light on this. Echinacea is one of the widest known, and most commonly misused herbal remedies on the planet.

Tens of thousands of clinical trials have shown it to be effective, not to mention an 8000 + years of anecdotal evidence from herbal physicians. On the same note, there have been hundreds of reports, very much like some of the ones here, that report it to be ineffective.

Echinacea has a very complex, but also very fragile chemistry. In light of this we must ensure that we take it in the right form. We must use prducts prepared in such a way that the active chemistry that delivers the medicinal effects, remain intact. The best bet here then is to take it as a liquid extract. This is because the drying and powdering techniques used to prepare the tablet and capsule versions often destroy the active chemistry and leave the extract virtually useless.

The second issue is dosage. A tiny dose once or twice a day will do NOTHING! Echinacea needs to be used at a doe of around 30drops every two hours, in order to flood the system with it and get the immune system fired up. This leads me to the final issue - when to take it.........

Echinacea should only really be used at the first signs of acute infection. It is at this time that the above dose should be used. This isnt becaue it gets less effective, its more a case of prolonged use pushing the immune system too fa and causing other problems.

I hope this information is usefu.

It is my absolute passion to educate people as to the correct and safe use of herbal medicine, so if you have any questions at all please feel free to ask here, or send me a message via this site and Id be happy to guide you.

Another remedy

i used to use echinacea to treat my cold symptoms but i too found that it wasn't that effective.
a few months ago i heard of this black elderberry liquid called Sambucol -it boasts great immune boosting properties. i decided to give it a go. I found that it kept off the cold that i thought was coming over christmas. I carried on using it (they recommend to keep using it over the winter) and i managed to avoid catching the bug at work that everyone else seemed to get. I would recommend it as it doesn't become ineffective if used over a longer period of time as it just keeps strengthening the system.

Echinacea

I have heard that echinaccea is effective when it iis taken in cures of 10 to 12 days, and then you have to stop, or else it has the opposite effect. You can do several cures , but with a break in between. The best thing to do is to rotate your herbal teas. A great website which I use: www.sevene.fr
they have lots of info on each herb, and they are excellent. Good luck. bonbon

Beware of echinacea

i have recently started taking echinacea for about a week, after hearing that it can help boost the immune system, but i regret very much buying it, it did mess with my digestive system so much, am experiencing constipation/diarrhoea alternatively and its going on for 3 weeks and no signs of improvement

Dosage

I think you can take it long-term, but you're right in thinking that it becomes less effective. I think it is better to treat one-off illnesses, although you need quite a high dosage.
