But I don't think it's a matter of loyalty, faithfulness or else. It's more a matter of feeling and way of life.
You say cats scratch, OK, but dogs bite ! However, when you have a dog, you learn to think as a dog, and you eventually understand your dog, you know what you must or mustn't do not to get bitten. Well when you have a cat, it's the same ! You must learn to behave and think as a cat, to understand your cat and know what to do and what not to do to avoid getting scratched.
I know many people who have cats and who have assured me that they never get scratched, or if they do, it's because THEY have made a mistake. Like a dog doesn't bite without any reason, a cat always has a good reason for scratching.
Whether you prefer dogs or cats shouldn't be based on whether the former bites or the latter scratches. It depends on your own character. People who prefer cuddles, quietness, who like their "comfortable little nest", etc. will most probably prefer cats, whereas those who like moving, meeting friends or other people, walking, etc. would certainly prefer dogs.
Neither do we have the same relationship with a dog as with a cat. With a dog, you have to be authoritary. With a cat, YOU do what SHE wants you to.
I know some people who, after preferring dogs, have started preferring cats while getting old.
Anyway, for the time being, I prefer dogs.

So what does everyone prefer? I personally prefer dogs over cats. They're much more loyal and you can teach them stuff too. They don't scratch you either!
