Hi there

I have two budgies (Twinkle and Scooby)
My birds are so happy they are caged but they have the "penthouse suite". They are spoilt rotten they get hand fed and are the best cheer me up when you have the monday morning blues x

Is it wrong?....

Please don't take this the wrong way but I don't think we should keep birds in cages. I'm sure you love your budgerigar but if we didn't buy them in the first place there wouldn't be a market in them and then they'd be left to fly around the rain forests, where they belong. If I was a budgerigar I know where I'd rather be!

Is it wrong

I have two budgies. I understand what you say about if we didn't buy them in the first place there wouldn't be a market. However we have a seven year old budgie who was disabled when born. He had a disabled wing and a disabled foot. The person who owned him wanted to pull his neck. My husband would not allow this and raised that budgie from a chick. Seven years later you can do anything with that budgie he is so tame. Both my birds are let out of their cage when we are at home to fly around and play. They come out and play for awhile and they go into their cage on their own accord and they are extremely happy. It takes alot of time and patience to tame them but once they are they give alot of love. If it hadn't been for my husband one little budgie would have had no life at all. Can anyone tell me what happens to the budgies of elderly people when they can no longer look after them?

Loving your budgie

I totally disagree with Saffron 1. Lots of lonely old people need the companionship of a friend and in some cases a bird is all they have! Of course a bird is not an ideal companion - but then, is a 'toy boy'? Should we cage them or return them to the wild?

If the government provided youthful companions to the elderly (free of charge)
then the birds could be returned to the diminishing rain forest - along with Safron!!!!

Grannie - please concentrate

I think you've missed the point Granniekool, this wasn't about lonely old people but caged birds. I don't see how 2 wrongs make a right either? Keeping a bird in a cage shouldn't be a comfort to anyone! Seeing birds in the wild, yes but in cages, well that's just the arrogance of human beings over the animal world surfacing again. What have toy boys got to do with it?

Budgies versus toy boys

Safron - which would you prefer to cuddle?

Ladies!

Goodness me, I didn't realise budgerigars would provoke such strong emotions! xx

What can it say?

My father had a bird which could say 'peanuts' and 'thank you'. how polite!
