'2012 is sitting on top of the world-even though the movie is all about the end of it.
According to early estimates, Columbia Pictures' apocalyptic thriller-purportedly based on Mayan prophesy-pulled in $65 million at the box office this weekend, good for the number one slot.
The Disney movie 'A Christmas Carol' starring Jim Carrey, finished second with $22.3 million; 'The Men Who Stare At Goats,' an Overture film with George Clooney, finished in third with $6.2 million.
Showing surprising strength was the grim, low-budget, wordily-titled urban drama 'Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire.' The Lionsgate film finished fourth at the box office, bringing in $6.2 million while playing in limited release. It helped that talk show powerhouse Oprah Winfrey put her name behind the project.
