Has anyone seen it yet and what did you think? I'm really looking forward to it, I love Mike Leigh as a dirctor and I want to see what he does with this hot potato issue...

I heard Imelda Staunton spekaing on Woman's Hour about it and I was interested by the US reaction to the film, apparantly so far it has been very good. Maybe if lots of people over there see it and realise that that is the way their society is going to go if GWB takes away women's right to an abortion, more Maericans will get behind the pro-choice lobby.

I'd be really interested to read what other people think, on both sides of the fence. I think it's going to provoke some strong reactions, go to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0383694/maindetails
and scroll down to the message board for some interesting reactions.

hope everyone's having a good day!

I was so disappointed to see that VD didn't win any Oscars!
I suppose it was quite predictable though, it's a British film which deals with abortion, a hot topic in the US. Still, would've been nice to see it buck the trend.
"Give the woman an oscar!"

I thought it was amazing, the look on her face when the police came for her said it all, Imelda Staunton is fantastic
My only criticism would be that there were too many references to putting the kettle on!

What a fine actress Imelda Staunton is (Vera Drake) - glad to see she won Best Actress at the BAFTAs and Mike Leigh Best Director. The whole film and everyone in it was so good - disappointed Phil Davies didn't win best supporting actor, he's very much under-rated and was excellent in the part of her husband. Apparently Mike Leigh only let him read the up to the point where she (Vera) is taken in to custody so up to that point he didn't know, in real life, what her crime was. When she told him in the film (in the police station) his reaction was genuine! What brilliant acting! Not many Hollywood actors could contemplate such a part - actually I can't think of any at the moment.
Ciao!
"Bloody anti-abortionists!"

I see the pro-'choice' brigade have recently got their teeth in, was wondering how long it would take...
They've said that it is unrealistic, that the number of women dying from backstreet abortionists was exaggerated, that the Imelda Staunton character would, in reality have been a money-grabbing ... making gains from her friends misfortunes etc. etc.
I'm really looking forward to seeing it!
