What are you reading?

I'm reading The Autograph Man by Zadie Smith.
It's brilliant, I love the way she can be funny and lyrical at the same time.
I don't know if I think it's better than White Teeth or not yet, but I think her ability to get under the skin or her characters and right into cultures which aren't her own is fantastic!

Hello from spain

Hi. I'm Spanish and this is the very first time I participate here. I'm reading Ken Follet's The Pillars of the Earth. Wonderful! It's so different to his other novels!
By the way, does anybody know if he's writing the sequel?
Bye

Now i'm reading

The Bookseller of Kabul -it's really insightful about life under the Taliban. Has anyone else read it?

I have!

it was brilliant, so hard to imagine, made all the tv pictures from the Taliban period more real.

I'm reading

The crime of the mosaic" of Giulio Leoni where Dante Alighieri is a detective of the story..Ciao from Italy!!

After rome..hello from paris

I'am currently readind The Devil wears Prada in English because it is not difficult to understand...
and I've just finished The Age of Innocence from Edith Wharton (but in French this time!).
Could you tell me more about White Teeth? what is it about?
Thank you for your answers.

White teeth

It's basically about multicultural immigrant life in London - the intertwined stories of two families, over about 20 years, an Indian family and a mixed-race marriage between a Jamaican girl and an English man. It's really, really good, very well-written and subtley funny, although if you know England at all or have read much in English you probably won't have any problems.
I definately recommend it!

Thank you

katy276 for your answer.
I'll try to find this book in English!
Bye

Ciao librarbitre!

my husband is from paris, too.
the french title of White teeth is "Sourires de loup"

Ciao ombretta118

grazie per il titolo ..well maybe it's better to speak Engligh as we are on the UK site...
but i love speaking and reading in italian too.

ciao ciao

Ciao from rome, italy!

I've just finished reading Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.
I loved it.

I read The Autograph Man by Zadie Smith two years ago, but I didn't like as White Teeth.

I've got two books by Fred Vargas on the list of the books I'd love to buy...

different countries same literary interests

Hello!

thanks a lot for your suggestions!
I didn't study English literature at university, but I love it.
Did you spend a good Easter time?

Hello rome!

Read Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier probably 30 years ago and loved it. It's so nice to think that even today people can enjoy reading these writers who have a much more gentle style, another in the same vein is Arnold Bennett. Currently reading 'Saturday' by Ian McEwan, his latest novel, very good. Have never read anything by Zadie Smith but will do so. Another very satisfying writer is Anita Brookner. Anyone read her?

Hello saffron1

I've looked for Anita Brookner, but here in Italy her books are edited just by small publishers so it's difficult to find opionions about them. Could you tell me, please, which one you liked most? Thanks a lot!

ombretta

Hello ombretta!

I think Anita Brookner's best are Hotel du Lac, Bay of Angels and Rules of Engagement. You could try Amazon, I'm sure they'd have most of her books. You seem very knowledgable about English literature, have you studied it at university?

Hi ombretta!

I haven't read Anita Brookner, although I know my Mum likes her a lot. Have you tried ordering her books from Amazon? It's really useful when you live abroad and can't get hold of things.

Books

Hey whats up everybody!
Good Morning from the U.S
Im Simone, I am from Brazil but Ive been living in the U.S for 9yrs
I love to read also.
And the "hot" book here in the U.S now amongst my girlfriends is "100 Brush Strokes Before Bed" Its a controversial Journal about a young Italian girl trying to find herself thru different sexual experiences, Its very intriguing and shocking, but you just cant get your eyes off of it ...I read it in 6hrs!
Anyways...if you are open minded you should give it a try and read it.
Write back and tell me if you are familiar with this book, and what do people think about it there?
Thank you, bye bye!

Hi otherwhitemeat!

I read an article about that girl in the english press, what she's done is really interesting. She did well to write it all, she's so young, but I wonder if it's only selling so uch because it's about sex? What did you think of it really?
There's book a bit like that which came out in the UK a couple of months ago, it's the diary of a London call girl (prostitute), which was originally a blog. In parts it's well-written, but in parts not, a bit 'studently', but it has sold quite well becasue of the media hype and subject matter.

Cannot choose one...

I've just finished reading Da vinci code (yeah, I tried to resist, but I finally wanted to know why everybody was so fond of it!!!)
Just right now I'm reading "gossip" by an Irish writer whose name I fail to remember right now ... It's about a middle-aged guy, who is kind of loser...It's only the beginning...I'm also reading a french detective story written by Fred Varga which is really good...

Can you tell me more about The Autograph Man? What is it about?
