vitamin k

Hi Ladies!

I was wondering what some of you thought of Vitamin K? I had not heard of this as an extra supplement before, i have read up on it and have found it a vitamin the baby will have very little of at birth, i have choosen a few paragraphs from the kent midwifery practice website, here they are :

Vitamin K is naturally found in the human body and protects against bleeding by helping the blood to clot. For reasons we do not know babies are born with very little Vitamin K but begin to produce it once they are feeding regularly.

There is a risk that a baby could develop a condition known as vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB). The baby may bleed from its cord or nose or have unexplained bruising that if not treated could lead to impaired lifelong health or even to them dying. The treatment is an injection of Vitamin K.

Now to me this sounds serious, but then the artical goes on :

The risk of your baby having this condition is approx 1:10,000. The recommendation that your baby has vitamin K is considering that the one baby who becomes ill or dies could be yours. However it is much more likely that your baby will be one of the 9,999. If that is the case he or she has received a substance it does not need into a stomach or body not designed for it and may also have been subjected to a painful injection.

so i feel a little confused about it, do i give this to my baby to prevent POSSABLE serious bleeding or not as i might be "subjecting he or she to a substance it does not need into a stomach or body not designed for it and may also have been subjected to a painful injection".

Please any opinions would be greatly appricated!!

Thanks Ladies

Well...

ive just recenlty had a baby and when i was looking over V-K the MW said we would recommend babies have it but its up to u...so for me for a MW to recommend a baby have it i decided that my baby would have it when born so whilst i was in labour the MW got me to sign the V-K part in the yellow book so as soon as she was born and i had a hold of her then they took her over to be cleaned, weighed and they gave her V-K injection and she didnt cry when the injection went in so i dont think it is painful? she has been fine no side effects?

Hope this helps u in anyway?!

L & R (wks +2) xx

Me too

I cant remember signing anything but I was advised as I had quite a traumatic C-Sec that he should have it. I opted for the injection as it was over ond done with and I didnt need to worry about giving drops (I probably would have forgotten).
Archie is no worse off for having the injection. At the end of the day it is up to the parents but I was strongly advised and I will always listen to the people who know best! xx

Take care hun
