Combine test results

Hi girls,

Im 13+4 weeks today, i had my combine test last thurs the scan went really well the the guy scanning said that everything looked fine the fluid at the back of the babys neck was perfect, on tuesday this week i had a phone call from my local hospital asking me to come straight in as they needed to talk to me about the blood results that they do with the combine test, when i got there i was told that i was high risk of a downs syndrome baby infact i have a 1 in 60 chance, as you can imagine we are heart broken, tommorow i am going for a cvs where they insert a large needle through your stomach into your utereus and remove a sample from the babys placenta the procdure carrys a 1 in 100 chance of miscarriage but this is the only way that we can get a 100% answer yes or no, they have also said that the baby might not have downs it could mean the baby would be very small or there could be nothing wrong at all, i feel all over the place it was only 2 years ago that i lost my twins and had a still birth, and in a strange sort of way this is worse as the choice was taken from me with the twins and i had to deal with it the best way i knew how, but with this we are making the choice, i have the cvs and they tell me that all is well and then i go on and miscarry or i have the cvs and they tell me the worse,
The only thing at the moment that is keeping me going is my other 3 beautiful children who are 7, 4, and 16 months,

I would be really grateful if any of you have had the same thing happen to you and you can share you experiences with me.

Thank you in advance

Emma,x

Hi!

Firstly I would say if you will carry on with the pregnancy regardless of whether the baby has downs then I would not have the CVS. If you would terminate then have the test.

I had cvs done as my risk was 1 in 65 because of my age,we would have terminated had the baby had problems.

The test itself is uncomfortable and you need to do nothing for 24 hours after the test and also take it easy for a further 48 hours. No lifting etc! Basically 24 hours on the sofa feet up,remote control and computer...nothing else! You will probably get a few cramps but generally just feel bruised. After a couple of days you feel as normal. I only had a few cramps no bleeding or anything.

They give you the quick results within 2 days and the full results within 2 weeks, they will also tell you the sex if you want to know.

Take care

I can't share the same experience but just wanted to say be brave...

Life seems to be so crewl to some of us, and its not like ou haven't been through enough but your a strong women and you have helped me sooo much..

I've just had a little google and it says that the figures have changed recently to 1 in 400 chance of m/c after the test and those who did - pretty much bleed within the first 24 hours after having the test - i know this dont help you but if i were you after the test go home get in bed - elavate your feet and stay there for 48 hours - dont lift anything and dont do anything just relax - get OH to deal with the kiddies..

Would you end the pregnancy (not a nice way to write that) if it came back "high"? if not is there any point in getting the test done - you will find out at the 20 week scan? - Can you not go for another scan to check that way??

sorry im not much help but just wanted to give you a hug and let you know im here...

Had the same!

Heya hun.... had to reply as have been through a very similar thing... My baby showed up as having 3 times the amount of fluid on the neck as normal, and I was put down as my baby having a 1 in 20 chance of having Downs Syndrom, I had the CVS which isnt as bad as it sounds just very uncomfatable... Just dont look at the needle!!!

Anyway after the hardest two weeks of my life, the results all came back fine, went to the 16 week and the 20 week scan and all the fluid had gone and baby apparently is absolutly fine.
So there is light at the end of the tunnel.... I promise, and nothing I can say will make you worry any less, as I know ive been there. But there is a huuuuge chance that your story can be like mine, so just keep your chin up, as difficult as it can be,

Let us know how you get on, my thoughts are with you, and fingers crossed

Poor you...

Hi Emma!

I am 24 weeks and over the past few months have read various posts similar to this, all of the outcomes where really good and no problems with the baby... I have everything crossed for you and really feel for you in this situation but take some solace from the other posts i have read (kittycat was one i think, i can't remember the other...damn)...

Good luck tomorrow, i am sure everything will be just fine.. I have had no tests on this baby, what will be will be...

Thinking of you,
