Growth scan - midwife freaking me out!

Hi all,

Hope all ladies and bumps are doing well.

I saw the midwife this morning, she is hopeless!

She measured my bump and as normal didn't tell me anything, I asked her what I measured and she said 31cm, I measured this at my last appointment too (34 weeks) I said oh, 'thats the same as last time I was here, well I did measure small with my daughter and went for a growth scan, but was never that small!' She said well its only 3cm, I said 'no 6cm as I'm 37 weeks', she said,'oh yeah, was thinking you were only 34 weeks.'

She then totally changed her tune and looked all worried and said she was going to send me for a growth scan as soon as possible, rang the hospital, but soonest they can do is next tues. She was asking if I had any pains recently and I said that I had had a stitch like pain a week or so ago, she then listened to heart beat and wouldn't meet my eyes any more. Not very confidence instilling!

I'm sure that everything with bub is fine, I mean it doesn't ever stop moving! I did carry small with my daughter and I definately feel much bigger than I did at 34 weeks, so to say bump hasn't grown in 3 weeks is mad, my husband and all my friends have been commenting lately just how much bigger I have suddenly got so I'm sure she must have mis-measured me?

However her attitude and everything has got me a bit nervous. Also the fact that I am apparently 6cm small and apparently haven't grown in 3 weeks makes me anxious!

Just needed to get it off my chest!

Also if anyone has one of those growth charts in their notes can you work out approx weight of baby measuring 31cm at 37 weeks as I don't have one in my notes and just want to know just how small baby could be if had to come now. I know they will prob work all this out at scan, but 4/5 days is an age to wait!

Hey

This just sounds like my last MW appt i had at 38wks! I hadent grown from 36wks (36cm) & because i had high BP she was worried it had stopped my placenta from growing. I had also had alot of gastric pains & my MW looked very concerned. That was a Tuesday & i was booked in Friday for a scan but my little one arrived very early Thursday morning.

Try not to worry. My little weighed 6lbs (my first daughter was 6lb 15oz)
Hope this helps

I know....

Is stupid midwife forgetting my dates as she had only just written it in that appointments notes about 5 mons before!

I measured about 4 cm small with my daughter and growth scan said she was fine and she was 7lbs 3oz born 8 days late.

So rationally I know not to worry but its just the fact that apparently I haven't grown in 3 weeks and am now 6cm small.

Alex - when you did the weight for me after my 34 week check, measuring 31cm it came up that baby was 5lbs, whereas it has come up less now? suppose i assumes that it was even smaller at 34 weeks or something?

Anyway as I said I'm sure everything is fine, just stupid midwife! Annoys me when they act all funny, as if we don't have enugh to worry about without them adding to it, and they know that we are so emotionally charged!

Will stop babbling now!

Dont worry

Hey - I had a similar worry when i was measuring too big - mainly due to the midwife's attitude scaring me, it was completely pointless, i was referred for a scan and made to feel silly for being there when it wasnt my choice. i went for the scan and they decided to not even scan me

ive since learned that soooooo many woman measure too big too small, it is so not accurate, makes me wonder why they use it as a measurement. just to save the NHS money i reckon! evey woman is a different shape, some have more and less fluid, some bigger or smaller babies. you will have grown but the baby moved about, u might have less water retention - so many factors. alsong as baba is moving - baba is ok

my midwife is on a different planet, sometimes i have to check the is alive she is so unresponsive. i went for my midwife app a couple of days ago, when i was in she took a fone call, asked the person on the fone to hold a second, then asked me if there was anthing else (as in hinting for me to leave) n i was like yeh, can u deal with the fonecall later, i have questions if u dont mind......the cheek. she had trouble takin my blood and when i got home my arm was really sore and now it is all bruised - ive never been bruised getting blood takin like this.

so in agreement - the NHS is crap and a I pray a get a semi-decent midwife for giving birth!

ok now Ill stop babbling (but it does feel better )

Sorry hun...

The chart is really confusing to be honest and it only gives a rough guide say if you measure 31 that makes baby approx 2100 grams. So then when you try to convert it to pounds and ounces it only gives you a rough conversion scale that 2098 grams is 4lb 10oz. Which I took today, I must have made a mistake the other week and I really apologise. Like I say it is all a bit confusing lol. How they can predict sizes this way really is beyond me as all it takes is forbaby to be lying funny and it sets it off.

Really sorry again, even managed to get mine wrong too, my brain must have turned to mush that day lol. Although 4lb 10oz is only 4 oz off 5lb so really don't worry. They say they can put on a pound a week over the last few weeks.

Its ok!

Wasn't worried about the figures, just wondered about it changing.

4lbs 10oz is still not bad, as long as it does put some more on before its born, even if it doesn't prem-babies can weigh less than that and be fine and in 2 hours 20 mins mine will be full term, so at least wont have any developmental issues that prem-babies can have.

Anyway I'm sure it actually weighs more than that anyway as we all know small bump doesn't necessarily mean small baby!

Kat

Silly midwife!!!

Makes me so mad that they can't be bothered to check important details!!!

Every midwife will measure you differently , and give different opinions so don't worry hun!

I have the growth charts in my notes and from this your baby is weighing about 4lb 10oz which if it follows the same growth line means that it will be around the 6lb mark at 40 weeks, so really that isn't that bad. And to be honest they arn't accurate and 9 times out of 10 are completely wrong. My friend measured 4 weeks small at her 38 weeks appt. When she had a scan they said baby was fine, and she was 8lb 2oz born and was only 4 days late so it just shows that they are complete rubbish half the time.

Please dont worry, My baby at 40 weeks should apparently weigh about 8lb 4oz, and thats measuring 1 week small??!!! My daughter was 15 days late and still only weighed 7lb 6oz which is normal and I measured big at the end!!

Really don't worry, I have heard so many women lately that say they have had to have scand as baby is measuring big or small, and they have all had normal size babies.

Hope this helps hun

I agree

Hiya Kat, i totally agree, they are crap! I went yesterday and she just placed her hand on my stomach and said "feels about right". She didn't listen to the heart or anything, i was in and out, total waste of time, they don't give a hoot really!!

My friend was measuring large for her dates and as she never saw the same MW was always having scans. Everything is ok. After her last scan (i was with her) the MW took her to one side and said that every woman will measure differently because of their body size, ie, a smalll woman measures large and a tall woman can measure small and not to worry as a scan would have picked up problems.

If your MW was really concerned you would have been in sooner i am sure.

It makes you laugh though how WE have to tell them about our dates etc as they can't be bothered to read the notes. It's quite scary really.... the only way is to go private but it's about 10k!!

If people have commented on how large have got i wouldn't worry too much...

Hope everything is ok, it will be!!

Hi kat...

I think the MW care in the UK is utter crap i go on a lot of american websites and there so much better and things like there 37 week check contains a cervix check for leaking waters and a scan so against our rular check and wee sample the NHS seems really poor - if only theres something we could do about it!

If you were the same with your daughter i wouldnt worry as much and jsut hold out for the scan - or ring the community mw and just explain i have done this on serveral occasions and said that i werent happy with my appointment and they have sent me to the hospital to have a look over so if you are worried just pop there and dont worry if they moan!

your only a day in front of me ....
