Cots, cot bumpers and blankets etc

Hey girls.
Just wondering what you're all doing about sleeping arrangements for your new arrivals etc.
I've got a cot for our bump but should he/she be in a moses basket at first or can they just go straight in cot? Daisy was in a moses basket for the first few weeks then into a cot but this time round I haven't got one as her's fell in bits and I couldn't really afford one at the time. Plus she was 16 weeks premature so when she finally came home I felt safer with her in a moses basket next to me as she was soo tiny and frail.

I've got a mattress for the cot plus loads of different blankets, a thin quilt, thin pillows and a cot bumper.
I know they can't have pillows until they are alot older and they can't have quilts either but what blankets do I put in the cot and how many etc when they are newborn? And what are you all planning on dressing your baby in at night?

Also how do you all feel about cot bumpers? There seems to be alot of contraversial issues on these. My friend from playgroup said they should be placed at the bottom of the cot where the babys feet are as they are dangerous but when Daisy had hers I put it at the top. She was fine with it and we never had any issues.
I was only 16 when I had her and I wasn't very confident about these things so just did it how I felt best. I didn't have that much support from anyone older and couldn't afford baby books etc. Daisy has been fine though!

Sorry for all the questions! You wouldn't believe I have a daughter already would you? Things seem so much more complicated than they were 3 and a half years ago and rules seem to of changed! I also feel like I've forgotton what it's like to have a newborn!! I just don't wanna do anything wrong arrrrh I feel a bad mum !

Hay Kirsti,

I have bought a cot this time - i had a moses basket with Mya and it was rubbish and the one i bought was the most expensive and bought a seperate mattress so all in all cost me £120 it was hard to tuck her in properly and just really annoying - you cant carry them around as its really unsafe and even though i only had her 6 weeks it just didnt seem to hold right and i think she would of out grown it quiet quickly - my sister had a baby at xmas and she used a cot straight away and she said it was soooo much easier she had the setting at the top for newborns and bought a mattress to use from newborn to and she just said it was tons better - so dont waste your money the cot is fine..

for the amount of clothing etc - i have a thermo from mothercare in my bedroom its a little egg that has a digital display of the temp and also glows the colour so blue for to cold - yellow for recommended - orange for warm - red for to hot

heres what is says blanket wise

under 16degress: sheet and 3 light weight blankets
16-20: sheet and 2 light weight blankets
20-24: sheet and 1 light weight blankets
Over 24:just a sheet

Clothing wise just a nappy - vest - babygro (if not maybe one of those sleep suits that are like babygro but fleecy..

Also baby should never have a hat on indoors unless advised to babys lose heat through there head so covering it can make them over heat if there to cold then increase a layer of clothing - hats should only be worn outside to keep heat in.

They say dont use cot bumpers around the sides of the cots as they can suffocate so would need to be placed at their feet.

Also if you do get a cot you still need to keep baby in your bedroom for first 6 months..

Hope that helps

Hey hun

Not long to go now!!
Ive just popped over from B&T
Archie is 14 weeks, at the moment he is going to bed in his baby grow and Ive just started using a 1.0 tog Grow bag as hes started to kick his covers over his head!! Before this tho Ive been using Cululer (sp*) blankets, Im using 2. You can get those things that look like thermometers that tell you how many blankets to use mine came from Babie r us with a blanket set.

Our HV advised not to use cot bumpers until bubs is at least 1 year old.

Archie is in a crib but I do know of people who have used Cots straight away and been fine

When I was in hospital the MV advised to put him in a vest, baby grow and a hat but I thought it was too hot.

Babies are much better off being on the cooler side then too hot.

Definately NO to the duvets and pillows tho hun xx

Hope this has been of some help
Adele+Archie xx

thanks hunny!

Yes that's been really helpful thankyou! It's been so long since I had a newborn and I'd just forgotton I think I may still have one of them thermometers somewhere I'll have to dig it out. I knew you weren't allowed to use duvet and pillows, the bedding set just came with them in.
Think I'm going to get a grow bag. Can you use them from birth? They didn't have things like that when I had Daisy lol.

Right well I'll put the cot bumpers away. I have one and used it with Daisy but I don't know how old she was. It says you can use it from birth but I did know they were some contraversial issues with them so thought I'd ask opinions.

I used to dress Daisy in a vest, baby gro, mits and hat and she had 2 blankets in her crib but she was 16 weeks prem so I had to keep her warm as for the first few weeks after she got home from hospital, she couldn't maintain her body heat very well. So I'm not very clued up on babys that aren't teeny weeny and premature! Lol!

Thanks for your help Adele. Hope you and Archie are well.

New borns should not have qulets or pillows.....

they can wriggle under them and qulets can overheat them. Ive read this in several places - wait til they are a year before you use this sort of bedding.
Newborns also like to sleep somewhere more enclosed and cosy feeling as a bit open cot can often freak them out after being so long in a cramped womb!!! I would suggest a basket or crib (as I am doing) in with you to begin with, then when out grown this, go to cot.

Yes i know

that they cannot have quilts or blankets until they are older!
I was just wondering how many blankets were needed to keep baby warm and what kind of blankets you should use.
I think I will have to buy a moses basket then. I just can't really afford one they seem so expensive.

Thanks for replying everyone
