anti depressants and preg......

I have a 7mth baby boy, and have been suffering with post-natal dep for last 5 months. When I discovered I was preg agian I stopped taking medication, however have been very down recently. Psychiatric dr has advised me to commence medication again but am worried about any abnormalities this may cause my unborn. Have been advised that baby may have withdrawel symptoms for first few days.
Would be nice to hear from anyone who has taken antidep in preg to put my mind at rest.

Hi Rach,

I was on anti-d's from when my daughter was 20 weeks old, found out i was pg in june and my dr told me to stop taking them as not enough research has been done to know the side effects of them on babies.

I was on citalopram and the withdrawel from them combined with morning sickness was horrendous! Like Toni, i have good days and bad, just when i think im over it, some tiny insignifacent (spelling is rubbish) thing will set me off and my poor hubby gets the brunt of things!

Your not alone...

I came off my AntiD's when i got pregnant against the advise of my Dr. Its been really rough on me and my family especially on Hubby whose had to take on most of the care of our 5yr old as well as coping with me Hating him.

I'm 30 wks now and have been tempted to go back on them many times. I worry about taking them again after the baby is born as it took me a long time to get adjusted to them and i spent the best part of a month totally out of it.

I think toni given you some really good advice there. You know how much you can take and if its too much then its too much, 'dont make yourself ill'. one day at a time love.

All the best

Danni 30+1

Hey hun

I was in the same situation as you, I was on a high dose of anti-depressants for my pnd since my son was 6 weeks old. I found out I was pregnant in Jan/Feb and immediately stopped taking my anti-d's.

I went through withdrawal for 2 weeks and it was horrid, then I started to feel down again. I went back to the doctors and was given a lower dose of my tablets, I never took them as not enough research has been done to know the effects of anti-d's on an unborn baby. I am still quite depressed now, good and bad days and my doc thinks I will be back on anti-d's after I have had my lil girl.

I would say if you can cope without them then try to but don't make yourself ill over it. With pregnancy hormones all over the place and pnd sometimes things seem to balance out a bit.

Good luck hun, pm me if you want to chat

Hey hunny

I have never suffered from post-natal depression ( touch wood lol ) and I haven't ever been on anti-depressants so I don't really have any advice for you chick. I just HATE seeing posts unanswered! I'm sure there are a couple of ladies on here that have been on the tablets so maybe someone else will be more help than me!! I'm sure if you saw your GP or spoke to your chemist, they would be able to advise you on wether it's safe to continue using your tablets.

Just wanted to let you know I'm here if you need a chat or anything!

Love Kirsti, Daisy (3) and 35+3 yellow bump.x
