Well.....
Hi ladies,
Thank you for all you replys and opinions,it's always a help to hear other persepctives!
I did go ahead and have the vaccine, i did some research (research i didn't want to do before i was offerd the jab as not scare monger myself!!) and found it a great help, this is what i found and my view,
ok, so swine flu is just anoher strain of the what we know as the normal seasonal flu, there has been a vaccine tried and tested for this for a number of years now (since the 1940's!!!), it has had no reported side effects for pregnant women or their unborn babies, the vaccine for this has been made using egg culture, the vaccine is produced in 11-day old specialized eggs, there has been a more recent devlopment of a vaccine for people with egg allergies, this is cell culture, the vacccine is grown in vats of animal cells, the more tried and tested is the egg culture vaccine, although the cell culture vaccine is the one more likley to be mass devloped and produced and the egg phased out. The swine flu vaccines have been produced alongside the seasonal vaccines, which we know to work and have worked since the 40's/50's. so there is probably not much that differs in swine flu vaccine to the seasonal, i'd say it's just a bit stronger, like the virus itself, if you have a stronger strain of a virus surley you have a stronger vaccine(?).
The possable side effects of the inactive injection based vaccine that known are ; mild soreness, redness, and swelling where the shot was given ,fever and aches. the side possable effects of the active / live nasal spray vaccine are runny nose, nasal congestion or cough ,fever ,headache and muscle aches , wheezing, abdominal pain or occasional vomiting or diarrhea , with both the more severe, but rare side effects include: paralysis 1 or 2 cases per million vaccinations (GuillainBarré syndrome ) and life-threatening allergic reaction (with the egg based).
Possable side effects of not taking the vaccine and catching swin flu could only be mild symptoms of flu, but there are exceptions. Some people are in higher risk groups, such as those with asthma, diabeties obesity, heart disease or ladies who are pregnant or have a weakened immune system. (such as myself!!) there can be worse symptoms for these people where the flu rapidly develops into severe pneumonia, 3 to 5 days after the first noticed symptoms, deterioration can be very rapid, progressing to respiratory failure within 24 hours, requiring intensive care and ventilation support.
Based on the above info (which has come from various web sites) i decided that it is in MY best intrest to go ahead with vaccine as i have a comprimised respiratory system already, so for me to catch swine flu, would likely cause me further potental serious breathing complications which undoubably would have a serious effect on my unborn baby, as she would not be recieving the oxygen she needs, and then when she is born if i was to catch it, i would possably have to spend valueble time away from her whilst i recover, ending breast feeding and possably weakening our bond.
so far i have only the one side effect and that is a sore arm at the injection site! not really worry is it!!
I still feel it is a personal choice to have the vaccine, you know how well you immune systems is working and if you would be likely to catch it. I do also think the media hype over swine flu has caused alot of unjust worry, but having said this i STILL would have taken the vaccine if it were not such a high profile strain of flu, for my own well being and saftey, for me in my circumstances i feel it was the right decision.
I hope i have helped in some way for some people.
Thanks for reading (i know it was long!!)
Gem xx
