swine flu vaccination

Hi Ladies,

i am booked to have the swine flu vaccination at 7:10 tonight, but i am in two minds about it! i don't know what to do, i am 36 + 6 weeks and was admitted to hospital for a week, two weeks ago with "an acute respiratory infection" so my immune system is already low, and now i have been having sickness and diarrhoea which i'm sure will lower it even more, should i go ahead and have the injection or not? i am wanting to breast feed for at least six months so really don't want to catch swine flu and pass it on to my lil girl when she is here!

opinions please ladies!!

Thanks

Jab

hiya did u have the jab
i am 33wks preg and not sure wot 2 do

Well.....

Hi ladies,

Thank you for all you replys and opinions,it's always a help to hear other persepctives!

I did go ahead and have the vaccine, i did some research (research i didn't want to do before i was offerd the jab as not scare monger myself!!) and found it a great help, this is what i found and my view,

ok, so swine flu is just anoher strain of the what we know as the normal seasonal flu, there has been a vaccine tried and tested for this for a number of years now (since the 1940's!!!), it has had no reported side effects for pregnant women or their unborn babies, the vaccine for this has been made using egg culture, the vaccine is produced in 11-day old specialized eggs, there has been a more recent devlopment of a vaccine for people with egg allergies, this is cell culture, the vacccine is grown in vats of animal cells, the more tried and tested is the egg culture vaccine, although the cell culture vaccine is the one more likley to be mass devloped and produced and the egg phased out. The swine flu vaccines have been produced alongside the seasonal vaccines, which we know to work and have worked since the 40's/50's. so there is probably not much that differs in swine flu vaccine to the seasonal, i'd say it's just a bit stronger, like the virus itself, if you have a stronger strain of a virus surley you have a stronger vaccine(?).

The possable side effects of the inactive injection based vaccine that known are ; mild soreness, redness, and swelling where the shot was given ,fever and aches.
the side possable effects of the active / live nasal spray vaccine are runny nose, nasal congestion or cough ,fever ,headache and muscle aches , wheezing, abdominal pain or occasional vomiting or diarrhea ,
with both the more severe, but rare side effects include: paralysis 1 or 2 cases per million vaccinations (GuillainBarré syndrome ) and life-threatening allergic reaction (with the egg based).

Possable side effects of not taking the vaccine and catching swin flu could only be mild symptoms of flu, but there are exceptions. Some people are in higher risk groups, such as those with asthma, diabeties obesity, heart disease or ladies who are pregnant or have a weakened immune system. (such as myself!!) there can be worse symptoms for these people where the flu rapidly develops into severe pneumonia, 3 to 5 days after the first noticed symptoms, deterioration can be very rapid, progressing to respiratory failure within 24 hours, requiring intensive care and ventilation support.

Based on the above info (which has come from various web sites) i decided that it is in MY best intrest to go ahead with vaccine as i have a comprimised respiratory system already, so for me to catch swine flu, would likely cause me further potental serious breathing complications which undoubably would have a serious effect on my unborn baby, as she would not be recieving the oxygen she needs, and then when she is born if i was to catch it, i would possably have to spend valueble time away from her whilst i recover, ending breast feeding and possably weakening our bond.

so far i have only the one side effect and that is a sore arm at the injection site! not really worry is it!!

I still feel it is a personal choice to have the vaccine, you know how well you immune systems is working and if you would be likely to catch it. I do also think the media hype over swine flu has caused alot of unjust worry, but having said this i STILL would have taken the vaccine if it were not such a high profile strain of flu, for my own well being and saftey, for me in my circumstances i feel it was the right decision.

I hope i have helped in some way for some people.

Thanks for reading (i know it was long!!)

About the jab

hi wot 1 off the jabs did u have thanks

Same dilema!

Was adamant I wasn't gonna have it but my doc called me this pm and whilst she said she can't advise me either way she told me she had recieved new info today - info only doctors receiving aparently. She read me some of it and i came off the phone thinking I must now have it. She is going to send me the copy she received although i am aware its not really for my eyes. I will let everyone know if there is anything major to support either thing not mentioned on this forum. However she made me aware of the dangers of not having it to both myself and bubs. Bascially I am playing russian roulette by choosing not to have it.
Our families have told DH and I that whilst I could have another baby I cannot be replaced, (there were many tears fom them at this point) I see their concerns, but they haven't been able to test either a foetus or new born babies to see how they have or have not been affected.

I really don't know what to do. I havent had a cough cold or anything for yrs despite working in the pre prep department of a school. But it would be sods law to get something now, but i understand my immune system is compromised as pregnant. I would never forgive myself and feel whatever i choose will be wrong - the story of my life at times!!!!

Has anyone changed their minds either way in light of new info??? Feel free to PM me to discuss if you don't want your views (either way) posted on here.

Thanks, and i hope everyone is happy and healthy right now!!

You have to make the choice that you feel is right.

Personally I dont think it is professional for your doc to say what she has for you to feel you are playing Russian roulette. The risk of swine flu and the deaths from is is LESS than average flu, and I was never rang by my doctor with that level of concern about average flu, AND I had spoken to her about it as we had had flu previously. I dont know any other expectant mother who has ever been personally phoned to get the average flu injection and been scared into doing so.
(I am on a couple of the lists where you get certain information not to the public and nothing has come though for some time about swine flue, but I wont be on them all)

From the stats I have seen there is a greater risk of dying in the bath than of swine flu.

Its easy for me to say all this as I am not an expectant mother, however when I was I questioned everything for our babies and for me which lead to several arguments with consultants which they lost and looked stupid in the process.

Your immune system will be lower whilst expecting ... if you do want it, do more Independent research to back up your decision. I'm not sure if the doctors are also paid per swine flu injection as they are others - which encourages some greatly!

Good luck with your decision

Hey Gem, ive decided not to have it. my daughter had swine flu 3weeks ago and i think the fact i didnt get it then maybe my immune system is strong enough and i wont get it!?that might not be the case but im going to take the chance! i also had my hospital appointment last week and i asked the doctor there what she thought and she said that she wouldnt force any pregnant woman to get it and in her opinion there hasnt been enough testing done on it so that was good enough for me!!! i think its a womans own personal decision there are pro's and con's as with everything in life so its what you feel yourself! hope you come to a decision that your comfortable with hun! take care!

Hi gem

Thanks for posting about this. I'm really interested in this subject as I'm trying to decide whether to have it or not.

I started off saying no way was I having it because of the short testing time - we actually don't know what it might do to our babies.

Then I did some research on the net and some say it is developed along side the normal flu vaccine strain which has been tested as being safe.

I really don't know what to do - I was going to talk to the midwife about it at my next appt. I'm split two ways. Some days I think it's not worth the risk of endangering mine and the baby's life and then other days I think I don't know what it will do to the baby long term so I should hold out.

If you find out any good answers I'd be pleased to read your post!

Take care, Sam xx

Hey

Hey Gem

Personally i dont plan on getting it, i just dont feel confident in it due to the fact i dont think its had enough time for testing to be proved that it doesnt affect bubs. Most medications take years with trials upon trials and i just dont feel like less then a year is enough.

All i plan on doing is trying to keep my immune system up with probiotics and stuff and preventing catching anything as much as i can.

But its completely up to you , if you in yourself feel strongly about getting it and think your beter off doing so then take it.

........

HI Gem, it's really up to you. I would not have it, no way!

Best to do some research on the net about it and weigh up the pro's and con's. There are various posts about it on here where people go into it in more depth, maybe do a bit of a search.

TC,

Hey

iv been off it and im not haveing it they havent done enough testing on it plus the fact im 35 weeks it takes 2 weeks to work and it only helps the baby till there 6 months my own doc said not to to me and the chances of getting it is quite slim i no i could be that unlucky one but they can give u tablets in the worst case if the inhaler isnt enough xxx
