"First scan really late.... what can i do??"
Posted by shiningplanets 11 June  at  14:41

I'm currently around 13/14 weeks pregnant. I saw the doctor when i was around 9/10 weeks and then managed to get an appointment with a midwife when i was 12 weeks. I phoned the hospital as soon as I'd seen the midwife to book my first scan and to have all the usual tests etc, only to be told that by the time they can give me an appointment i'll be 17 weeks pregnant. I'm very worried about this as i have read that you can't have tests for downs syndrome this late. People keep telling me that I should really phone someone and sort this out as your first scan is supposed to be at 12 weeks, but what can they do if it is fully booked? I thought it was my own fault for possibly doing it all too late, but I've spoken to my mother and my boyfriends mother and both have said that they went around the same time as me and had scans at the correct times. Is this normal? Am i going to just have to put up with it? :s

I got my first scan when I was 14 weeks! I thought that was late! The midwife said that was the first appointment I could get, I was a bit annoyed as I wanted it asap to see my baby! The good thing is though, as I was 14 weeks the scan was so clear and we managed to get great pictures and we could see every detail, it was great!

Speak to your midwife and see if anything could be done to bring the date foward!

Congratulations and good luck

"Nuctal scan"

Hi

If you want the nuctal scan to test for downs syndrome all the literature I have read states this should be done between 11-14 weeks. This coincides with the first scan usually. You will will still be fine for the triple test for downs but it depends on which test you want.

My view is that you are entitled to a scan on time and have the choice of either test. I would ring the hospital and make this clear, they must get cancellations all the time so I find it hard to believe that they can't fit you in, they manage to fit in emergency scans. Be strong and don't stand for it! Your midwife should also be able to help.

Good Luck. x
