Pregnant after a myomectomy

Hi there

I just wondered if there were any mums to be out there that was pregnant following a myomectomy operation?

I had an op 4 years ago, am 36 next week and am 13 weeks pregnant with my first baby. My first scan went well, although the sonographer found two more fibroids. She said that they were on the opposite side to the baby and should'nt cause any problems, but would keep an eye on them to make sure thay don't grow any larger. They now have to write to the hospital to find out what sort of cut was made to my uterus to determine whether I can have a natural birth.

Very excited but worried at the same time. Have been getting some sharp twinges in my right side. Hope that's down to my uterus stretching and not the scars causing the pain.

Booked in for a quadruple blood test in three weeks time so will ask about the twinges but they may have some news from the hospital by then.

Anyway, good luck to all you new mums and mums to be.

Once year since myomectomy, still have pain

I had an abdominal myomectomy about a year ago, and I still have pain in my lower right side. It's not super painful, but it is uncomfortable. I think it's worse if I am active that day, walking usually. Since it has been over a year, I'm worried. Some people have healed really quickly, I guess I still don't feel healed. My insision area also still feels really weird. Anyway, I was just wondering, how you know it is scar tissue? Is there any way to test for it? My doctor doesn't seem too concerned. I

Fertility pills

Hi
I'm 25, never had a child and never being pregnant. I just recently had a myomectomy and i plan on get pregnant as soon as possible because i was told the fibroid could grow back.

I was wondering if it will be necessary for me to take a fertility pill to increase my chances of getting pregnant or not.

All the best everyone

Me! i am...

I am 36 and had a massive abdominal myomectomy five years ago and in that time succeeded only in one miscarriage at 10 weeks (the embryo had failed to develop after 5 weeks).

However I am now - finally! - four months pregnant with a healthy-looking boy.

I had a single fibroid the size of a melon, and the surgeons weren't able to predict my fertility because they'd never done a myomectomy on that scale before. I am worried about uterine rupture, which is often catastrophic, but I hope that after five years my uterus might be almost as good as new - no further fibroids have been picked up.

I am being told that planned C-section at 37-38 weeks is my only option, but that's OK I guess - I can add it to my abdominal scar collection...

I will dig out my old surgery notes and hope to get some reassurance from doctors... I really don't want my uterus to rupture... does anyone know of anything that might fortify it a bit?

Hello,

what is a myomectomy??? Good luck I hope all goes well with your pregnancy

My myomectomy

I needed to look up mymomectomy myself on the internet for the best description, and I saw the surgery on YouTube, but basically myomectomy just means the removal of the entire fibroid tumor within the uterus, leaving the uterus in tact, and the doctor needs to make an incision similar to a C-Section. I had my own mymomectomy experience two weeks ago (not good so far). Now before I tell you MY story, I want you to keep in mind that EVERYONE is different. I am 38 years old, I have a seven year old and have been trying to get pregant, no luck yet. I was told I had 6 fibroid tumors, some intramural, submucous, etc. Anyways, after surgery I come to find out that I had 20 fibroids removed. A fertility doctor removed my fibroids, I recommend a fertility specialist for surgery if you want to become pregnant. I had an incision that was much bigger than my C-Section ( 7 inch in length) 30 staples removed, just so you get the idea. I lost alot of blood from the surgery and needed a blood transfusion, so if you have alot of fibroids, ask your doctor about banking your own blood just in case, as I didn't do this, and I had no idea that I would lose so much blood. I'm still recuperating, feeling weak, and out of breath. I had a bad reaction to the morphine and pergaset I was given. I still can't sleep a full night, and it's been two weeks. I can't get comfortable enough. Thank God I have had my mother with me to help. You WILL need someone at home to help you after the surgery, especially if you have children, or someone designated to drive you or your children to their activiites. I have faith that I will be able to get pregnant again, but I do worry that since I had so many fibroids removed that this will cause unecessary scarring or the tissue attaching to other organs. My doctor DID place a thin medical strip cloth that disintegrates over time on my uterus to avoid it from attaching to other vital organs. I think all doctors now do that, but ask. I'm happy that my fibroids are gone, but it feels like I'm never going to feel better, but I know that in time I'll be just fine, back to normal, and look forward to getting pregnant again!! Good luck to everyone going through fibroid surgery.

A myomectomy is.....

Hi

A myomectomy is an abdominal operation to remove fibroids from the uterus. Years ago the only option was to have a hysterectomy but I was given a myomectomy so that the uterus would stay intact so that one day I could still have children. That was four years ago and I have been really healthy ever since. Before the op I suffered horrendous period pains and very heavy periods and after feeling a lump was given an ultrasound which is when they found the fibroids. I had 6 removed, the largest of which was 12 cms in diameter.

I am now 16 weeks pregnant and all is going well so far. I am waiting to hear from the hospital to find out if I will have to have a c-section or not.

Just a note to all women that have suffered with fibroids and have had a op to remove them, it is possible to have a healthy pregnancy and I am sure that there are many out there like me that are looking forward to bringing our little bundle into the world!

Good luck to all.

Take care

Just about to

Hi,

I'll be undergoing the surgery in a couple of months after I have finished my course of injections (I definitely won't miss them). I am hoping to have children but will see how it goes.

Naturally I'm worried - how long did it take for you to recover from the surgery. And how long do they recommend before you try to get pregnant?

I am so worried

Hello littlemi

I am in your exact same situation, I found out I have a fibroid a couple of weeks ago and I will undergo myomectomy in 3 months after a finish my course of 3 injections. I am so worried that when I wake up after the op I will be told that they had to remove everything. Im 31 with no kids and hoping it's not too late for me to have a child.
I'm frightened but at the same time I can't wait to get over all this.
Did anyone suffer any back pain? I am.

Good luck to everyone who went or is going through all this

Martina

Me too

Hi Dawn,
I also had a myomectomy 10 months ago in spain. Unfortunatly, I have no notes to pass on to my Dr, and therefore can only tell him what the surgeon told me.
I went to hospital to have a hysterectomy, but thankfully when i awoke he told me he had managed to put me back together!
I had a fibroid of 6 pounds removed, and he told me that there was extensive scaring, and that if i did manage to get pregnant, it wasnt a certainty that i would be able to carry a baby to full term, and if i did, would need a c section.
Well....I am 33 years old, and about 5 minutes pregnant. ( Stopped taking pill, but not thinking i would get pregnant in a hurry, not sure when last period was, not an organized sort me.)
I am terrified, so am glad to hear that things are going ok for you. I know its only early days for me anyway, 3 or 5 weeks or so, but like you i am worried over every little twinge. This is my first time pregnant also, so im sure i would be worried without the additional fears about scar tissue!
let me know what they said when youve been for your tests. good luck, and congratulations.

An update

Hi Vicky

Firtly, congratulations on your pregnancy. Like you I did worry in the very early days. I am glad to say that the twinges I was getting have disappeared on their own and for the last couple of weeks I've felt really well, almost back to my old self apart from the obvious bump I've now got! I am booked in for my quadruple blood test on the 4th July so once that is out of the way and I have the results I will be able to really enjoy the rest of my pregnancy. Only another 24 weeks to go!

I hope all goes well for you and congratulations once again.

Myomectomy terrified

I am so pleased to read about you. I recently found out that I have a 12cm diameter fibroid and have to have a myomectomy. I am terrified I will come round after the operation to say they've had to remove everything - all I want is children. I am 32 and married. I have to start the hormone tablets to bring on a fake menopause next month and then once the fibroid has reduced in size they will operate.
At the moment, I am stressing myself out, worrying about that 1% chance the operation will go wrong. But now I've read two women are pregnant after their myomectomy and there is light at the end of the tunnel. If you are still registered and still read this, I'd love to hear from you and have you had your baby.
Thank you
Emma

How did you get on?

Hi Emma Bee,

How did you get on? I went through exactly the same thing - a fibroid of about 18-20cm, and had to have those fake menopause implants... I am now 4 months pregnant but still anxious... Did you recover OK? How are things now?

Sparkles

I too got pregnant 6 months after myomectomy

Just to let anyone reading all this. I too was pregnant without even planning to less than 6 months after my myomectomy. The recovery was not easy from the surgery, but I think not having the fibroids made conception easier. I have taken a good multivitamin throughout my recovery and a month before the surgery and also I took a lot of antioxidents (blueberry and acai juices) and continue to do so for healing. I am in my 15th week of pregnancy. It is my first pregnancy at 42 and everything is healthy! I maybe feel some strange sensations due to my scar tissue. But my advice is try to relax mentally. Physically I have been working a lot and still everything is a-ok. Mishka

How are you doing?

Hello Mishka, just read your message and thought I'd respond and ask how you're doing. I had a myomectomy 4 weeks ago and seem to be recovering quite well. According to the report they removed 74 fibriods, the majority of which were very small. My consultant told me to wait at least 6 months before getting pregnant. I'm 40 years old and hoping my have my first child. Zarah.

I had a myomectomy a year ago

I had a myomectomy done last year, since then i have horrible abodimal pain from scar tissue. My Dr. told my i may need to have and laparoscopy done, but i do not want to have no more surgery. Has anyone experienced pregnancy with scar tissue pain, ? if so is there any complications?
