"8 weeks pregnant & worrying if everything's normal"

Hi folks! I'm 8 weeks pregnant and getting really worried about how things are progressing. Went to my GP today who's referred me to a midwife but said I won't get a scan until 20 weeks as the hospital I have requested don't do the nuchal scan! This seems like too far away, especially if there are any problems! I am already worried as I have absoloutely no signs of a bump and only really have started to feel a little sickly and tired in the last 3 or 4 days! I am 32 & this is my first pregnancy so I've nothing to compare it to, any ideas anyone?

"Pregnancy worries"

Hi, i can truely understand where u are coming from. I had my first son when i was 26, i had apart from 1 morning of feeling a little queasy i had absolutely NO symptoms, i was convinced at 9 weeks that my baby had died as i too had no bump to speak of, and although i had had a scan due to bleeding at 6 weeks and again at 8 weeks i had a scan at 12 weeks and he was fine. Im shocked that u have to wait until the 5 month scan, id be kicking off big time if that was me. But anyway the fact that u have had a few days now of mild sickness is a very good sign, im currently pregnant with my 5th! mad, yes, and im on anti sickness drugs, not that they are doing much. Your midwife can hear the heartbeat from a doppler at about 12weeks + or reassure yourself and get one off of ebay, seriously, ive got one and im waiting to get to the 12week mark to use it, its natural to worry i know, hope this helps.

I'm 31 weeks now and I didn't realise I was pregnant until I was 8 weeks gone but as soon as I found out I went through all the things I guess you are feeling now. A few tips

1) This forum is great. Use it to read up on things and ask questions - even if you think they are daft. They're not honestly!

2) 20 weeks seems an awful long time to wait for a scan and I think you should at least have a booking in scan at 12 weeks or so. Go back to your doctor/midwife and hassle them until you get somewhere. What i've found is that because doctors and midwives deal with this sort of thing every day they are a bit insensitive to the fact that this is your first child and have never done this before! One to one attention is a little bit lacking sometimes but persevere - when you do they are helpful.

3) Some health authorities simply don't offer nuchal scans (something to do with cost I guess) but you can go private. I'm 33 and didn't want to wait for triple test and so (after lots of agonising and reading up on it)we decided to have a nuchal at a private clinic. It is personal choice but ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS I MADE. The test results were good and it enabled me to relax a little and start to enjoy my pregnancy.

4) I never had a bump until 24 weeks so don't panic that you haven't got one. It will come, I promise. Then you'll be huffing and puffing and cursing slightly because you can't get comfy to sleep!

5) Be grateful you haven't got the sickness. I had it for 16 weeks and it zapped me. If you do get it try dry Ryvita's or my other favourite cure, Ready Brek. My little one is probably going to come out with a red glow around him!!

6) Try to enjoy it! It can be a worrying and anxious time but all in all I am enjoying the experience (especially huge boobs for a change!)

hiya its strange you are not getting a 12 week scan as this is normal, then you get a 20 week scan.2 weeks ago i paid £200 for a scan that shows what my chances are of a downs baby as i am at high risk being 39 when the baby is born. But the results came back that i am a low risk for downs. The crazy thing is i had to pay for and it was done like a normal scan at the NHS hospital.

hi i am 21 weeks pregnant and i have just had my 20 week scan , thank the loard every thing is fine, dont worry i was the same as you, you worry about every thing and the worry doesnt stop. i had no morning sickness i just felt realy tired all the time.if you cant have a scan at 12 weeks go to your midwife and ask to hear your babies heart beat just to reasure you. you have to try and not worry think positive thoughts as if your stressed it will have an effect on the baby. i felt my baby move for thye first time when i was 16 weeks ,absolutly the most beautiful feeling in the world.i am 22 and this is my first baby and i can not wait. good luck to you and your baby you will both be fine and you will be holding your baby in no time.

Hi, I am also 8 weeks preganat. I have been to the doctors who took a urine sample and that was it - he was really unhelpful. I should get an appointment to go for a scan when I am 12 weeks. I also have no signs of being pregnant, my boobs were a bit sore but that is it. I wish I was sick as i am worried that something has happened!!??

Why can't you have the nuchal scan? Stand up for this, if you want one, they shouldn't be allowed to deprive you of seeing your baby and making sure everything's okay!
I felt sick from about 6weeks-13 or 14 weeks, but i was never actually sick, luckily. You probably won't get a bump for a little while yet, so enjoy while you're still skinny! I thought i wanted one to prove my pregnancy now i'm 27weeks i feel huge, like i can't get any bigger!
Hope you get on okay,
Kelsey and Kyler xx

I too am 8 weeks pregnant, this is my third pregnancy but has been 7 years since my last born, i have been suffering with period pains on and off for the past few weeks and this concerns me as i never had these before. Has any one else had this??
I'm also really bloated, i feel large for 8 weeks and have my first midwife appointment on tuesay this week.
I have twins on both sides of my family and want to know that i am only carrying one!! I have had no sickness as yet but my nose is really sensitive to smells around the house.
any advice i would be happy to recieve from anyone having the same concerns as me.
Thanks
Alex

i cant believe they dont do the dating scan. this is as important as the 20 wk scan. what happens if you are carrying twins or your dates are wrong? have you thought about going private? i think it costs about £90. as for the bump im 16+5wks and im just starting to show and it now feels hard. i wish i only had symptoms like you, i was bedridden when i was 6/7wks. good luck with your pregnancy and let us all no how you get on. x x x

hello, i've heard that a lot of hospitals only do a 20 week scan and i can understand that you are anxious i was bad enough waiting for a 12 week scan, can you not request an early scan? as for a bump, i could only feel mine at 16 weeks, im 21 weeks now and if you didnt know me you wouldn't be able to tell...u'd think i just had been a bit over indulgent with goodies!
"Don't worry"

As for the symtoms - count yourself lucky - some people just do not suffer with them. As for the fact that you do not have a bump yet - that to is by no means uncommon and some people do not show until 4 months+ - when my mum was pregnant with me she did not show until 6 months even though she ate really well. Unfortunately i am only 10+3 weeks pregnant and i look fairly fat (although it is baby shaped).

As for your scan, if you are worried i would demand from your doctor and hospital or place where you can have your scan sooner. I personally wouldn't want to wait until 20 weeks. Maybe you should reconsider the hospital you have chosen. Obviously i do not know your area etc etc so i couldn't comment but speak to your doctor/midwife about your concerns regarding this.

Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy!!
