Be Careful. Just because your hair care specialist says they have been dying hair for years with no problems, or that a hair cap will keep you safe from dyes, does not mean it is so. Keep in mind that it is possible to INHALE toxic fumes when getting your hair dyed. Did you notice that nasty smell when getting your hair dyed? It is possible for inhaled fumes to be absorbed through the lungs, pass intp your blood and find their way through the placenta to your baby. No one can say if this happens, but until medical studies are done no one can say that it does not. I suspect your hair care specialist or your midwife is not reading medical journals. Even amongst specialists this stuff is very controversial.

Why risk the health of your baby in order to be stylish for a month or two? There is an article about safety concerns of skin and hair care during pregnancy on this website: http://www.health-beauty-salon.info/

"Make sure..."

Heya ladies,

my MW said as long as the room you are in is well ventilated (if you are doing an at home dye)then it should be ok, i will be doing mine in my back garden so i can get some sun while im at it. the thing i keep telling myself is there aremany women out there who dont realise they are pregnant until they go into labour and they go on with their lives like normal, im sure a few of them have dyed their hair without problems...though saying that i think i will get a few professional opinions before i actually go ahead and do it...i have an OBSTETRICS app next week ill ask them too, i will let you know what they say
Much Love

"I am worried now!!"

With what you have said about INHALING toxic fumes we have had the decorators in our house all week and there has been a strong smell of paint so surely this must apply for this as well, everyday seems to bring on a new worry my hair colour now seams like the least of my worries!

I have recently had mine highlighted and to be on the safe side I used a highlighting cap so that there was no chance of it touching my scalp and being absorbed into my blood stream.

However, I was 12 weeks when i had this done and at 6 weeks your baby is going through the most important development stage it goes through, ie its brain, its spine its organs basically everything that makes it into a little human.

Is there any chance you could post-pone it for a few weeks until you get past this stage?

I wouldn't like to say that it is definatly bad, but I wouldn't like to chance it either.

"Thought it was because of hormones?"
Posted by bouncygond 8 August  at  09:51

I thought the main reason to be cautious of dyeing your hair (after the chemicals issue) was that your hair changes in pregnancy due to hormone levels? Isn't there a chance that your colour can 'take' differently in different areas because your hair might not be uniform, and could leave you streaky or damaged? I know I stopped dyeing mine when I was pregnant first time 'just in case', and I just never bothered going back.

Hi Sarah

I've been putting a colour on my hair every six weeks all through my pregnancy and midwife said it was fine x
"Up to you"

It's really your choice. I dyed mine when i was 9weeks, i done it brown. Then when i was 16-17weeks i dyed it back blonde. Then my hair went all funny ginger and green because i was pregnant. It came right after a week or so, but i went away to London, St Albans, to stay with a friend because i couldn't stay in Norwich with the embarassment!
They say it's bad to dye your hair because it goes into your bloodstream, and could affect the baby. (I was told that after i dyed my hair 2nd time.) So now i'm just waiting until i have him
"!!!!!!!!!!!!"

its not because you are pregnant is cause you went from dark brown to blonde........when lightning hair from brown it goes from red...orange....yellow then white.depending on the strength of the color you use, depends on what colour it turns out so yours must have stpped between red and orange.....nothing to do with being pregnant!
"I stripped it first"

I took all the colour off it first, and my hairdresser said it was my hormones that done that to me

To be fair, I dyed my hair dark then went back to blonde and the exact same thing happened - I was ginger for three days! I had to progressively lighten it - and this is before I was pregnant. I think it's the dye, not the baby.

Know what you mean about the embarrassment though, my workmates thought it was hilarious seeing me ginger! lol
"I wouldn't"

Iv been told not to dye hair while pregnant not to sure why guess its the chemicals! Also not allowed a pedicure can have nails painted but not foot massage or body massage with aroma therapy oils as they are absorbed into your body! x x

Sarah,

I went to have my highlights done at a similar time to you and the advice I received before hand was to let the hairdresser know that you are pregnant as the dye can take quicker and therefore the colour be more intense when left on for the length of time you're used to.

It's weird to think that my hairdresser knew about my baby before my parents!

Good luck!
"Low risk"
Posted by deena15 7 August  at  13:58

Hi Sarah,

I dye my hair too and looked up about this.

What I read mostly said there is a possible slight risk due to the chemicals in the dye so most women usually wait till after the 12 week 'safe zone'.

"Omg!!"
Posted by leitia80 7 August  at  14:39

OH My God does that mean i can dye my hair?!?
my roots are coming through and they are grey...agghhhhhh...im 26 and i have more grey hair than brown its awful, i was so worried that i would have half dyed hair and half grey, it really does make you feel unattractive... i will double check with my midwife just to be on the safe side though
"Im a hairdresser!"

i get my hi-lites done every month & was due to have my hi-lites down last week, i too was a bit concerned but my hairdresser said coz i get the cap the chemicals actually dont touch your scalp so it would be fine. so i would say double check wiv ur hairdresser but it should be fine.
