Hi, I had my first meeting with mid-wife yesterday 10+ weeks. I thought from reading other messages in the forum over the past few weeks that she would check for the heart beat at the first meeting using a doppler. Anyway, at the meeting she said she usually wouldn't check for a heart beat this eary because she probably wouldn't be able to pick up a heart beat and in the past, couples have left disappointed and worried (you've no idea how disapointed I was to hear this, have been waiting for, what seems a lifetime now for this moment!). Asked her if she'd do it anyway and I wouldn't be worried (not half!) if it didn't work. She used an ultrasound and after a bit of searching she found it 'loud and clear' - can't even begin to describe that moment, brings tears to my eyes now just thinking about it.

When we were about to leave she said she was surprised we didn't have a mobile to record what we'd heard (what idiots we are, never occured to us at the time). What an angel she was, she offered to do it again. However, after trying for ages she couldn't find it the second time. She said it was probably because my bladder was full the first time (unfortunately I had to empty that same bladder for her earlier for a sample!).

Sorry for the long message - just have to share this! My point is if you haven't already been advised, find out if you need to drink loads of water for a full bladder before you go in, take something to record the heart beat (just in case), and finally, I've read loads of other messages from others who have had scans at 6 weeks onwards and they 'saw' the heart beat. Guess thats much the same and scans pick up more detail.

Why are you having a scan so early (if you don't mind my asking)?

Best of luck

"Dates"

when i had my internal scan i thought i was 7 weeks and they put me back to 6 weeks but then when i had my 12 week scan they put me forward to 13 weeks! so basically the dates i had originally worked out for myself was actually correct, but when i questioned it at my 12 week scan they told me it was very hard to be accurate with dates at the early scan.

I didn't actually here the heartbeat at 7 weeks but they point out the babies heartbeat on the monitor and they also take the BPM. I didn't actually get to hear the heartbeat until my appointment with the midwife at 14 weeks, she uses a doppler, you can actually buy these yourself, i ahve one but it is no-where near as good as the midwifes one!!

it is quite mad when you go for your first scan, it kinda makes it all real, i didn't cry but i did have my mouth open in amazement, my partner said i looked like i was catching flies....very attractive!

enjoy it!! xxx

babymia5 is wrong, i had a scan yesterday and was told i was about 6 weeks and seen the heartbeat flickering. although, i had the internal scan due to pains in side and wasnt sure how long i am, i dint hear the heartbeat but i guess that i couldnt hear it coz it was internal scan but seen it on the screen so you will probley see the dot flickering away. oh i wish i had my moment again, just talking about it is setting me off crying again. Dont worry enjoy it and you are allowed to cry when you seen the magical moment.

"Thanks to staceymy how reminded me"

you will probley get an internal first of all you get whats like a smear test, just checking for lumps and bumps dont worry about it, they may offer you a smear test if you havent had 1 in the past 3 years. then its on to the fun part if its a internal then its a probe which is shaped like the guys bit and that goes in you. Its not sore but if you a tickley like me then when they turn it round you might start laughing. I have had both scans with my mc and i found the internal one better as it doesnt put pursure on ur womb. i wish i could say your face when you see it, its going to make your day

Hi,

I had an early scan at 7 weeks and they were able to pick up the heartbeat then, it was an internal scan though, it is sometimes difficult for them to see the baby with an external scan so early in the pregnancy, dont be alarmed if they put your dates back a bit either as it is hard for them to tell exactly how far gone you are when the baby is still only very small. xx

"Ealry scans"

hello

due to cysts I have had 3 internal scans, 1 at 4 and half weeks, ust saw like a dark shadow on the screen, but i was in pain with my cysts so i didnt really pay attention, then i had one at 7wks and 4 days and i saw a little bean and a heartbeat, it was a very quick fluttering, then on Monday just gone at 9wks and 4days i saw the bean, which has trebled in size and can see the head and stuff and it was moving, wiggling like a little worm!

my next scan is in 2 weeks when im 12 weeks and should be a tummy one, all the others were external as they have to check the size of my cysts.

take care
xx
